I wouldn’t consider myself your conventional artist in my background, style, or journey to become a professional singer, songwriter, guitarist, and performer.
I was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka and moved to the United States when I was 22 years old to attend college. After graduating with a BA in Economics, I spent 16 years working for an investment management firm. In 2011, I decided to leave a successful career in the financial industry to pursue my lifelong passion of music and songwriting.
From my earliest recollection, I was captivated by the sound of music. I can recall how the melodies, harmonies, and guitar sounds of a song would ring in my head for hours after I first heard them. I remember how I would hear just a small clip of a song and I would sing it over and over until someone could tell me the name of it. The songs would infiltrate my mind and, regrettably, I would drive my friends and family crazy singing them all day long.
Though I found success in the corporate world, I was never able to forget music’s constant influence on my life. There was always a natural pull toward music and I knew that one day I wanted to look back on my life and know that I did what truly made me happy. That’s when I decided to plunge full into this new career and not look back.
While growing up in Sri Lanka, I was influenced by American, British, and Sri Lankan singer/songwriters, bands, and guitarists.
Some of my influences include Paul Simon, Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb (of Bee Gees), Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson (of ABBA), John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison (of Beatles), Don Henley and Glen Frey (of Eagles), Clarence Wijewardena, Don Felder, Mark Knopfler, Eric Clapton, David Gilmour, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Carlos Santana.
Listening to the music made over the past several decades, by master composers and lyricists, producers, and performers, I worked tirelessly to understand the framework of their craft. In doing so, I started my journey of becoming both a versatile singer/songwriter, guitar player, and performer.
In my debut album, I drew most of the themes from my beliefs, realizations, and observations over a lifetime. I believe I was privileged to gain a unique perspective on the richness of humanity as the two halves of my life were lived in two different continents among two different societies.
