Lunar Woods – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

PD: What type of artist are you?

LW: We are musicians first of all. We like composing, experimenting with sound and all this. Though, gigs are an indispensable part of any band’s creative activity. We wish to share our creative work and new material. And a live performance is the best way to do it.

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

LW: A couple of years ago a new drummer joined us. He participated in the recording of a new album which will be released this autumn. Lunar Woods today is a band of four. After recording of a new album, the band was reinforced with one more guitar. With a second guitar we feel more freedom when performing live. We are located in Russia, Izhevsk. Major part of our material is composed and recorded here.

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

LW: We love various music. Everything depends on the mood. We were particularly influenced by Deftones, Tool, Alice In Chains, Pink Floyd, The Beatles and others. We like progressive music with rich atmosphere and interesting catchy melodies.

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

LW: As any band, we dream about big scene, and this is our key goal for today. Besides, we don’t want to stop working on new material, we continue finding something new for us, trying ourselves in something new. In the next little while we would like to film a video to support new album for several tracks, and now we’re looking for a director.

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

LW: The main author of our songs is Ilya Fokin, our vocal and guitar. However, last album was recorded in tight interaction between all band members. The target was to release material which would satisfy the taste of each participant. Some songs were several times remade from scratch: structure, speed and lyrics, melodies of the songs were changing. This work required immense self-restraint, but eventually we got a great pleasure from work, and we are content with obtained result which we are excited to share with the audience. Our lyrics are about various things: mainly, these are stories from personal experience of band members. Some songs are based on movie plots, such as a single from the last album called How Does It Feel.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

LW: We are trying to be open to everything new: giving interviews, playing on music festivals, communicating with the audience. In general, I believe the best way to promote your material is making good stuff that you personally will be thrilled with.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

LW: It is a difficult question. Basically, it’s awesome when a listener has opportunity to download a piece of music they like. It’s also great when a person can support you somehow. By a like, by a comment or even financially. It seems so me this is how it’s supposed to work. There should be an energy feedback.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

LW: Indeed, sometimes you come across songs which hit your mood, your life philosophy so right that you have a feeling that it is you who could have composed this song – somewhere in a parallel universe. What comes to my mind now is Sound Garden’s Bones Of Birds. Rest in peace, Chris Cornell.

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

LW: We do not really like topics related with politics. However, more and more questions arise as you see what is going on in Russian government. Self-perpetuation of the power, social inequality, poverty, taxes and so on.

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

LW: I think the best time in the life of a musician is when you see the response from people in the house, people getting driven by what they listen to. It’s especially great when you see that the audience knows the lyrics and sings along.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

LW: Now we are working on acoustic album. There will be several rearranged pieces such like Welcome, Dead End, A Brand New Story. Besides, you will hear several all-new songs there.

PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?

LW: You may find our discography at almost any streaming platform. The listener may also get acquainted with our band’s  creative work and buy merch on our website.
