Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: What type of artist are you?
LS: I like to think that I straddle the lines between rock/folk/indie. Somewhere in the middle of all those!
PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.
LS: I began playing drums when I was 10 and I never looked back. I have been in many bands over the years but I released my first solo EP in 2016. I was a full time musician, making my living doing gigs in pubs and the like. Before Covid came and ruined it for us all!
PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
LS: My favourite singer/songwriters are Loudon Wainwright III, Tom Waits and Nick Cave, I even have tattoos of the latter 2! Outside of music I like to listen to a lot of podcasts, Duncan Trussell’s Family Hour is a personal favourite.
PD: What are your dreams and goals?
LS: One of my main goals for this year is to release more music than I ever have before. I have 5 or 6 singles ready for release and I believe that consistency is key! Other than that, I’d really like to get back to gigging as soon as possible/
PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?
LS: I write all my songs and they vary in subject matter, usually about the perils of life in general. Searching for meaning is something that tends to come up a lot in my lyrics.
PD: How do you promote your band and shows?
LS: I am very much focused this year on improving my online presence and social media content. It’s something I’ve not been very good at in the past but I have used this lockdown to learn a lot more.
PD: What do you think about downloading music online?
LS: I think the music industry is changing and while it is easier than ever to release your music and get it in front of a large audience, this also means that it is increasingly difficult to stand out. I also feel that it is very easy once you have released a song for it to be consumed by the void and forgotten about.
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
LS: Motel Blues by Loudon Wainwright is an absolute pearl. Comedic and moving in equal measure.
PD: What are some of your pet peeves?
LS: Slow movers in supermarkets. Just go faster!
PD: What is your proudest moment in music?
LS: I think I am most proud of the amount of music I have created and the fact that I have never stopped or had a break ever since my first band at the age of 15.
PD: So what are you working on at the moment?
LS: All my energy is going into promoting my next release ‘Be Kind’ on the 26th Feb. Beyond that I have delved into the world of making my own videos so I will be creating my next one and trying to build some momentum for the next release!
PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?
LS: All of my music is available on all main streaming and downloading services, there are also a lot of live/lockdown performances on my youtube channel, just search Liam Sullivan Music.
