Leon Marshall – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (

PD: What type of artist are you?

LM: I am a solo singer songwriter and I write with mainly a country-pop kind of vibe

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

LM: I started playing guitar at around 6 and had always wanted to perform, in fact to be honest I think I probably really started playing because I wanted to be on Stars In Their Eyes as Elvis Presley and meet Matthew Kelly!

I continued to play and started to write and played my first paid gig when I was around 16, I gigged regularly at local Open Mic Nights and Folk Clubs for a couple of years and then stopped music to focus on Art and Sculpture. I then picked the guitar back up again several years ago and have been gigging and writing ever since…although I never made it on to Stars In Their Eyes!

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

LM: Musically, the list is endless, Elvis, Fleetwood Mac, Sheryl Crow, Jack Johnson, Luke Coombs…I could go on forever! I’m a ‘people watcher’ so I take a lot of influence from the people I meet and see day to day, strangers. From a woman walking past me laughing on the phone to a guy in front of me in the queue at the local shop shouting at the cashier, I like to give them a back story and sometimes it’ll spark an idea for a song.

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

LM: Well, I’m pretty sure I’m a bit late for Stars In Their Eyes! But pretty much at the moment my dream is to get back where I was before the Pandemic! Ahead of that I want to refine my songwriting & keep performing, I love doing what I do.

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

LM: I write the songs myself, they’re about life, love, death and everything in-between. My latest song “Going Nowhere” is about an old flame who ended our relationship and then years later decided she’d made a mistake.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

LM: Social media, it’s a great way to get the word around fast!

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

LM: I think downloading and streaming is great for fans, and a great way for people to expand their music tastes quickly and easily.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

LM: Pinch Me by the Barenaked Ladies, in fact any of their early stuff, I think Ed Robertson and Steven Page are incredible writers and lyricists.

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

LM: Poor punctuality, I can’t stand being late, and hiccups. I always panic that “This might be it…I’m going to have hiccups for the rest of my life!” however I do find it pretty funny when someone else has hiccups, I’m sure they’ll be alright, but I don’t want them!

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

LM: Every time that a crowd sings one of my songs with me, I write quite catchy hooks so they’re fairly easy to get the hang of and often by the last chorus people are joining in, I love it.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

LM: I’ve been busy writing since the start of lockdown and am in the studio next week to get some tracks down and hopefully ready to share soon!

PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?

LM: You can find all my music on any streaming platform and head to my website, if you Google me, I’m not the guy that stole razor blades from Wilkos!
