Interview with Ash-Guitarist/Singer and Lorna-Bass /Singer and Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: What type of artist are you?
LOTWK: We’re Last Of The Wonder Kids and we make a lot of noise by the seaside.
PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.
LORNA-The new expanded line up of Wonder Kids is still fairly young, having previously only been a 3-piece finding our feet. We spent a couple of years gigging up and down the country and playing some great festivals but still felt we weren’t making the music we wanted to be. After covid, our fourth member Lenny joined and this year joining the ‘Young Thugs Records’ crew marks the start of a new beginning for us.
PD: What are your dreams and goals?
ASH-I’ve been to Glastonbury every year that it’s been on since 2007 so before I’m through I suppose we really need to play it (I await your call, Eavis). Besides that it sounds cliche but just to make a great record that we’re really proud of.
PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?
ASH-I write the lyrics but we all contribute to the music. I suppose they’re mostly about my life, or a way of dealing with emotions or venting, or sometimes just exploring feelings or ideas that interest me. Which is actually a dangerous system because I can write an obviously semi-autobiographical song, and then something completely fictional just exploring an idea and everybody I know personally thinks it’s about them! That’s got me into some awkward conversations…
PD: How do you promote your band and shows?
LORNA-We’re pretty active on our social media, that’s the best way somebody can keep up with what we have going on, especially on our instagram or Facebook.
PD: What do you think about downloading music online?
LORNA-I’m a huge fan of physical media, creating something of substance that you can actually hold, but it is what it is now. Our passion is in playing live and transferring that energy into the studio but we’ve had to play into the hands of Spotify and Social Media like everybody else so we try not get too worked up about any of it, it’s all part of the job.
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
ASH-I could say something beautiful here, there’s a lot of Beach Boys tracks that spring to mind. However, Motley Crue – Kickstart My Heart because it is pure trash and has saved me from 90% of the hangovers I’ve ever had. I’d love to have been playing that live back in the day.
PD: What is your proudest moment in music?
ASH-The first time we were played on BBC 6 Music. We also got added to their Recommends playlist, and sat right above Car Seat Headrest who’s record I was obsessed with at the time. When I was at university we didn’t have a TV but the first person up would flick the DAB Radio on to 6 Music and it would stay on downstairs until the last person went to bed. It’s a habit I took with me, and whenever I hear us being played or spoke about on there it still blows my mind.
PD: So what are you working on at the moment?
LORNA-We’ve been in the studio the last few months recording a solid years worth of material that we’re polishing up now ready to release. It includes some re-workings of old tracks from when we were a 3 piece that fans have kicked off about when we said we were getting rid of them, which is a good thing I suppose!
PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?
LORNA-So like I say, we’re currently reworking a lot of our back catalogue so some older material will be removed from Spotify and a lot of streaming services, however you can still find our entire discography on our Band Camp.
