Joan Avant – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (

PD: What type of artist are you?

JA: Gothic Victorian… Imagine the Victorian age meets Hard Rock.

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

JA: I was classically trained since childhood.  However I played around with drums and guitars for some time.  I ended up going to music school, and specializing in history and criticism.  Then I ended up teaching violin for a number of years and still continue to do so.  But in 2017, I started writing and recording original songs which gave birth to my solo project.

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

JA: Baz Luhrmann’s musical/movie “Moulin Rouge” changed my life.  I love the history of the Victoian/Belle Epoque time period.  Musically, I’ve been influenced by Classical, grunge, rock, electronic, and metal music.  To name names, I would say: Philip Glass, Joan Jett, Garbage, Epica, and Devin Townsend.

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

JA: I really think that I am doing my dream.  Maybe one day it can become more of a full-time job for me though.

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

JA: I write my songs.  I choose from a number of things namely historic themes, fantasy, and personal experiences/observations.  Sometimes I’ll retell stories from gothic literature or fairytales.  And sometimes, I just create characters to write about.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

JA: I usually use social media namely Facebook and Instagram.  Facebook: joanavantmusic  and Instagram: joan_avant_music

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

JA: Well honestly with all of the streaming sites, most people don’t bother.  But at the end of the day, I would rather someone enjoy my music than not.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

JA: Garbage. No. 1 Crush.  It’s such a psycho song… I’m all about that.

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

JA: When you’re driving through a construction zone and a car zooms up to the cones to cut everyone off… hacks me off.

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

JA: I actually think this will be a near future event, but I’m really excited to release my new album “Dies Irae.”

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

JA: I’m currently in promotion mode of my second album, but after that I’ll be on to album 3.

PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?

JA: I currently have up my debut album “Drown Ophelia”  which can be bought from my shop at  And I currently have a Pre-Order for my upcoming album “Dies Irae” at
