HWY – ‘Marionette’

(Released 23rd September 2022)

Since emerging in Manchester a little over three years ago, five-piece HWY (pronounced Highway), have been turning heads both across the city and further afield thanks to their uncompromising and idiosyncratic brand of genre-spanning alt-rock.

Indeed, while most bands seem content to carve out their niche and settle in it, HWY have blasted theirs out of the genre’s bedrock and yet still refuse to be pigeonholed, taking their cues from bands as disparate as FOALS, Queens of the Stone Age and The Amazons. As such, the band’s focus is on energetic riffs, using elements of ambience and electronics to imbue their music with an exploratory sense of dynamics, something which in turn leads to mellow mid-sections and heavy, anthemic choruses that hit like a brick.

Their latest single ‘Marionette’, is a perfect example. Three minutes of solid riffing and impassioned vocals, it was described by the band as “recapitulating some of the most torturous years of my life, reflecting on severe emotional abuse at the hands of an ex-partner. I wanted this song to represent my mindset during this relationship, and to serve as a reminder to any person of any age, race, sexuality and gender that they don’t need to suffer through love, and deserve to be able to love themselves first and foremost”. It’s another bold message from the band, yet one that seems to be especially salient in the current times
