House Handshake – Interview
Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: What type of artist are you?
HH: We find art in many things we do but we’re here to talk about our music. We fit somewhere between rock and folk.
PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.
HH: We’re from Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada. We live together in the centre of the city. Our philosophies around music are around our chemistries and how that really translates into a performance. Quinton and Sarah, our lead vocals have been dating for more than 3 years, they realized they wanted to start a band when our Bass player Darrell moved in across the hall. It took some moving around but eventually we found Tanner our keyboard player and in 2018 we launched House Handshake. Along the way we felt a sensatiable groove with our drummer, who was working on our demo before he even knew us, and our lead guitar player Tate, who initially jumped in when Quinton. In one crazy year we’ve played over 50 gigs, headlined our first festival, released our first EP ‘House’ and received soaring reviews.
PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
HH: Our house always has people coming by and jamming with us. All sorts of great people exchanging and experiencing. Sometimes something just happens, and it inspires us to write something. Or maybe someone comes by and shows us some new music and it influences us to try a new style.
PD: What are your dreams and goals?
HH: Our goals with our music is to inspire people to get closer to themselves and then the people around them. We have big dreams to one day open up a recreation centre specifically for music and other art if you can wrap your head around it, but we cant give too much away.
PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?
HH: We all write the songs, they’re usually about ourselves. Our pasts, memories, worries. They’re usually about expression and at one point they were created so we can feel something and accept.
PD: What do you think about downloading music online?
HH:Embrace the future. I don’t see the point of the CD unless your car has a player. We really believe in vinyls as they are the highest quality and provides a great platform for the art. I think we’re on the verge of discovering a way for indie artists to make some real money again through things like live streaming and downloads.
PD: What are some of your pet peeves?
HH: Really vague questions.
PD: What is your proudest moment in music?
HH: Getting our masters back was unreal. Finally we can hear back our songs the way we intended. The release party was so much fun too. You can find ‘House’ everywhere digitally.
PD: So what are you working on at the moment?
HH:We’re working towards a full self titled album. We just released the EP ‘House’. Next, later this year will be ‘Handshake’ and then we’ll record 4 or 5 more and compile the EPs for the full album and do a full physical release.
PD: Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.
HH: We’re playing some festivals this summer if your in Manitoba for festival season your guaranteed a good time. We’ve got all sorts of shows set up in Winnipeg. If you’re here come and join the crowd and get in on the energy! find us on Facebook or visit our website www.househandshake.com so you can keep up.
