Hot Suede – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

These questions are being answered by Bobby Wayne (vocals). Any opinions and thoughts expressed here are merely his own and might not necessarily reflect those of all of Hot Suede.

What type of artist are you? If you had to put us in a category, it would probably be the “hard rock” or “rock” category. I personally think we’re much more than that, but of course, I’m biased.

Tell us the brief history of yourself. Chad (bass) knew me from a mutual friend and he had been playing with the rest of the boys for a bit and writing super cool music. They needed a singer so he asked me. I was a bit hesitant to commit to a project but when I heard the music, I knew it was something I immediately wanted to be a part of. That was a little over a year ago, and here we are.

Who are your musical and non-musical influences? The obvious ones, of course: Zeppelin, Soundgarden, Black Crowes, STP, etc….At the same time, we also love bands like Kings X, Cave In, and Hot Water Music. Personally, I have a real soft spot for Buck Owens. But, I might be the only one.

Non-musical influences for me would probably be a great filmmaker. Panos Cosmatos just directed a movie called “Mandy” starring Nicholas Cage and it was one of the most batshit insane things I’d seen in a long time. So cool.

What are your dreams and goals? For the band: To continue to put out records we get excited about and hope that people will get excited about them too. Play some shows and make a little money.

In general: Lounge in a hammock and sip rum out of a coconut full time.

Who writes your songs, what are they about? It’s a pretty collaborative effort, really. Sometimes someone will come in with a completed song, lyrics and all, and we’ll work on it if we all love it. Other times, someone has a riff or an idea, and we expand on that. As far as what they’re about…that’s up to the listener.

How do you promote your band and shows? We have a pretty solid (and growing) social media following that we’ve had a lot of success with. Recently, we started working with Dewar PR and are excited to promote more shows and our upcoming record through that avenue. You know, standard band stuff.

What do you think about downloading music online? I think as long as people hear our songs, and get other people excited about it, I don’t really care how they get it. I don’t really think anyone is downloading anything in more anyway, it’s all streaming.

What’s your outlook on the record industry today? Not a particularly good one. I already put down a deposit on a helicopter because I was counting on a huge advance from a major label. Turns out they don’t do that anymore, so I have some explaining to do to my family.

What song do you wish you’d written and why? For royalty purposes alone, it has to be either “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow”, or “Happy Birthday”. As for a sentimental favorite of mine, I grew up in a pretty religious household and there is a church hymn called “How Great Thou Art” which I always thought was one of the prettiest songs I’d ever heard.

What are some of your pet peeves? People who have no idea what they want to order when it’s their turn. I mean, we’re at Arby’s, bro. We’re going to be miserable later regardless. Just fucking order already.

What is your proudest moment in music? My proudest moment with Hot Suede thus far is getting to open for The Struts at a place called The Truman in Kansas City. One of the biggest crowds we’d ever played for, and they weren’t expecting us. They were so welcoming and responsive we felt great. It was only our 6th ever show too. Not to mention, The Struts couldn’t have been nicer. Although, they didn’t invite us to the Victoria Secret Fashion show they played a few months later. Maybe next time! 🙂

Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there. Our next show is 2/17 at a really cool club in Kansas City called The Riot Room. We’re playing with a really great band called ‘Warbly Jets”, who recently were the supporting act for Liam Gallagher. We’re super excited. You should be there if you are a fan of great music. Simple as that. We’re gonna bring it! Every show!!! Thanks so much
