Hercules Mulligan – Interview
Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: What type of artist are you?
HM: Synth-pop/Indie Rock
PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.
HM: We (Ben Gaston & Trent Tyler) have been playing music together since we were 15 years old since we were kids in Eastern Washington state, and Hercules Mulligan is our most recent and certainly most complete musical creation together. We recently looked up and realized we’ve somehow become 31 year olds.
PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
HM: Our inspirations are all over the map, but I think if you made a salad with early 2010s indie pop like MGMT, STRFKR, and LCD Soundsystem, mixed it together with some Tears For Fears, Tom Petty, and Neil Young, then topped it off with a little bit of Chic and Hall & Oates, you’re probably pretty close to what we’re going for.
PD: What are your dreams and goals?
HM: We hope to get to the point we can start playing the musical festival circuit within the next year or two, but regardless of how that pans out, we plan to create music together for the rest of our lives. This band is a vehicle for our shared vision of writing fun music and throwing a rocking dance party for anyone who wants to join.
PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?
HM: We both write songs that are about our experiences in a fast-changing, currently super fucked up world. Our songs focus on the quirks and oddities of being kind of old, super white business bros in 2020 San Francisco.
PD: How do you promote your band and shows?
HM: You can listen to us on Spotify, YouTube or any other online streaming service. We’ve also been featured on a bunch of Spotify playlists, TikTok videos and blog posts. We get these spots both through professional teams we employ and through our own work.
PD: What do you think about downloading music online?
HM: We think downloading music in legal way is fucking dope. Pirating seems uncool, but if you want to pirate our music feel free. We just want people to listen.
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
HM: Blood by Anima! This is maybe the best song of the past 5 years, in our opinion, because it moves through a variety of musical ideas and genres seamlessly. And also thumps.
PD: What are some of your pet peeves?
HM: Racists. Homophobes. Misogynists.
PD: What is your proudest moment in music?
HM: Playing Jack Johnson at a high school pep rally in 2006.
PD: So what are you working on at the moment?
HM: We are working on a second album that will continue to focus on dancey, funny songs about our perspectives on the current citation.
PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?
