Heathen Hearts – Interview

Interview with Jere Orre / Guitars, Backing vocals and Lauri Sillanpää / Guitars, Backing vocals of Heathen Hearts and Pete Devine of Pete Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

PD: What type of band are you?

HH: Heathen Hearts is very aggressive yet melodic metallic hardcore. Our influences within the band are coming from different genres, but core of our sound and the attitud is very much rooted in hardcore. – Jere

PD: Tell us the brief history of your band.

HH: In 2020 I gathered the guys to play a Turbonegro cover show at a local Turbojugend party. Obviously things didn’t go as planned and everything got canceled due to one pandemic which I’m sure everyone is familiar with. Then year later in the fall of 2021 our drummer Ville asked if we’d want to play some hardcore with this line-up and things started rolling pretty full speed from there on. Like a week later we had rehearsed two of our first songs. – Lauri

I personally didn’t know anybody of the band that well, except Lauri whom I’ve been playing in the same band as teenagers. As soon as we started to write and rehearse together, everybody got so excited on what we were creating, and pretty soon came to a mutual agreement that we will push this band with a full force. We have released one EP accompanied with two music videos and constantly writing new material. – Jere

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

HH: I did grow up listening to a LOT of In Flames and Children Of Bodom, so I guess that can be heard from the riffs and melodies that I compose. My mom is my non-musical influence. The way how positive she can be despite whatever has happened is very inspirational. – Lauri

My musical influences as writing stand point comes from a hardcore and punk scene which I love, live and breath. Of course there are also a lot of metal influences also included which I listened to when I was a teenager, and nowadays I listen to everything from pop to black metal. Maybe the bands I really look up to at the moment are Terror, Comeback kid and from more “metalcore” side The Ghost Inside and Architects. Non-musical influences got to be my parents. I guarantee it has been quite hard to put up with me. – Jere

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

HH: Music wise my dream is to release an LP record (which should happen sooner than later) and go on tour outside of Finland. Life wise I want to stay healthy and live a stable life with my loved ones. It’s the little things that matter the most. – Lauri

To have a healthy and stable life, and a stable mind. Taking care of my loved ones, and being there for my friends and family. Music wise, writing and releasing music that gets me and everybody else in the band excited, and if other people like it, that is a big plus. Touring outside of Finland is one of my dreams, and I hope we are able to start planning that soon. -Jere

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

HH: I have been writing most of the demo’s which are arranged in to complete songs with the whole band, and also have been co-writing melodies and riffs quite a lot with Lauri. The aggression of our music is something that speaks to myself and is a way to express myself in a way I cannot express in any other way. Our singer, Antti, has been writing most of the lyrics, which are not about love, flowers and sunshine that’s for sure. Mankind is a beast and the world we live in is not a good place to be. – Jere

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

HH: As for band promotion, we had a few different PR agencies in and outside of Finland which helped a lot to get the exposure for a new band like us. At this moment we have a pretty clear vision on how to proceed with the future releases. Live shows are mostly promoted through social media, since at the moment we are playing shows only in Finland, which we hope that the borders will expand in the near future. – Jere

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

HH: I think that since streaming services have grown more popular, people don’t download music anymore. At least I don’t know anyone who would do that still. – Lauri

Disrespect to the ones that are making the music and pouring themselves into the art they are creating. But for example buying the right to download for example from bandcamp, that is the way to go and has my full support. -Jere

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

HH: There must be a couple of those. But at this moment I would say Fjara by Sólstafir. That song is just perfect in every way and it resonates with my melancholic mind. The main melody speaks to me in a very special way and the guitar sound is sick! – Lauri

The one that we have not written yet. I enjoy all kinds of music more than anything, but to me, at some point I want to look back and think “Holy shit did we write this” -Jere

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

HH: If things are not done straight away as agreed. Gets me every time even though I’m not even the best person to moan about it. -Jere

The use of comic sans. – Lauri

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

HH: Everything that this band has done so far and the work ethic we have as a band. Forming a completely new band, finding the sweet spot right from the start and being able to release music that people actually enjoy as per feedback and reviews. And one major thing would be coming to 2nd place in a finnish band contest this summer, through over 160 bands. That was a bit overwhelming. -Jere

For me it’s kinda the same as Jere said. But I’m sure the best is yet to come! – Lauri

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

HH: As we are still promoting our first release we are constantly writing new material and are about to be in the pre production phase soon which we actually didn’t do for the first EP. Playing a few shows this fall in Finland and hoping to get the second EP out latest early next year and then playing shows to promote the next release. We are also hoping and working to get PR / Label / Management associates who enjoy our music and share the same vision as us. -Jere

PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?

HH: Our first EP can be found from all streaming platforms, if you want to support you can buy it from Bandcamp. Both music videos can be found from our official youtube channel as well as from Hardcore worldwide youtube channel. Merch is sold at Unomas with worldwide shipping.
