Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: What type of artist are you?
GS: We are musicians and good ones
PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.
GS: Guy Snowdon & The Citizens is an original rock band from Cleveland, Ohio. It is the brainchild of Guy Snowdon (Vocals/Bass), a transplant from the home of British heavy metal, Birmingham along with Billy Brock (Keys), Zach LeFeber (Drums) and Michael Weber (Guitar).
In October 2019, the band debuted at a John Lennon Tribute concert at the Beachland Ballroom, a Cleveland historic venue. Since then, it has performed at many Northeast Ohio live music mainstays including headlining at the Music Box Supper Club and virtual showcases in Ohio & Pennsylvania like the 48 Hour Music Fest CLE and Mindrocket Sessions.
Snowdon grew up in the Midlands of England on a healthy mix of pop, jazz, rock and world music from his parents’ and grandparents’ collections. Songs from Tears for Fears, Buddy Rich, Aztec Camera, Youssou N’Dour were early influences which led to discovering British legends, The Beatles, ELO, Queen and Oasis. At 16, Snowdon pursued music in college, studied music technology and joined a band. Even at an early age, Snowdon stunned audiences, friends and family alike with his unique rock voice that seems disembodied from his unassuming presence and has been likened to some of rock’s biggest names.
For the next five years, Snowdon honed his skills playing bass and fronting original Leicestershire band, The Fores, which enabled him to tick off an item from his bucket list – playing The Cavern Club in Liverpool. After leaving The Fores, Snowdon pursued a solo career, writing his own music and working the singer songwriter circuit in Birmingham. Snowdon has an enviable ability to pick up any instrument, play by ear and bash out a tune. He worked in a music retail shop which enabled him to not only play the best instruments in the world but also meet and learn from some of the best musicians in the world – Robert Plant, Duff McKagan, Billy Duffy, Billy Sheehan, David Ellefson, Ron Sexsmith, John Tempesta, Richie Kotzen and Joey Jordison, just to name a few.
In 2010, fate stepped in, he met his American wife and five years later, his daughter was born. In 2016, he found a new musical home in Cleveland, Ohio where he embedded himself into its vibrant music scene and began freelancing as a producer and recording artist.
But his ever-growing catalog of original songs were begging to be played by a full band. And thus, Guy Snowdon & The Citizens was born. With The Citizens, he brings a new sound that is infused with his diverse inspirations from the UK like anthemic guitars, heavy metal high notes and Brit pop beats. But he also exploits the talents of the band members he has meticulously chosen to bring his original songwriting from a single-handed, do-it-yourself recording to the live stage.
In 2020, Guy Snowdon & The Citizens released two singles, “Runaway” and “Hammer Falls” and a live recording featuring additional songs, “Desert”, “In My Stride” and “I’m Free”. The tracks channel three decades of rock with splashes of classical, country, ethnic and jazz
PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
GS: Our influences woah tough one, there are so many…. Let’s keep it simple the Beatles, Queen, led zep, Tom petty, ELO, billy Preston and many more. None musical influences we would say everyone we have ever come across as those people have shaped our lives and given us experiences (good and bad) which has led us to be able to create our music
PD: What are your dreams and goals?
GS: Our goals are simple become a successful band that influences and helps people with our music.
PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?
GS: Mostly Guy writes the songs but we all bring our own elements to the songs. Each song has a different meaning which would be to long to go in to.
PD: How do you promote your band and shows?
GS: Online social media also through our website and any other mainstream media.
PD: What do you think about downloading music online?
GS: Downloading music legally is perfectly fine as long as the musician is properly paid. Illegally downloading music well it’s in the name ILLEGAL it’s a no no.
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
GS: I (guy) wished that I had written the entire second half of Abbey Road as it is just pure genius. Sorry it’s not a song ummm so an individual song I would say Happy birthday as the royalty payments would be astronomical.
PD: What are some of your pet peeves?
GS: Guitarists who noodle when everyone else is trying to talk
PD: What is your proudest moment in music?
GS: Meeting our manager David Spero the man is a legend, he is the reason this band is exists
PD: So what are you working on at the moment?
GS: Promoting our album and getting a small tour together next year
PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?
GS: We have our first two singles, a live EP which was recorded during lock down and our brand new album “One”. Everything is available on all major platforms.
