Five AM – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

PD: What type of artist are you?

Five AM: Five AM is an innovative 4-Piece Alternative/Pop-Rock band. We blend a variety of genres in a tasteful manner while still pushing boundaries for what is considered “acceptable” within the alternative scene.

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

Five AM: All four members were friends through the local music scene. We started writing demos together for fun in 2015/2016 and then started playing them live. Everything has just happened naturally since then. We write, record, and gig as often as possible now.

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

Five AM: We’ve got so many influences as a band, but we like to consider ourselves a mix of old Fall Out Boy and The Weekend’s earlier music. Our non-musical influences are definitely our friends and family. I bet everyone says that but it’s true!

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

Five AM: We’ve got big dreams just like any aspiring musical group but we take everything one day at a time. Really, we just want to keep playing music, meeting new people, and having a good time while we do it.

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

Five AM: We all write the music. Sam writes most of the lyrics. He normally writes about partying, heartbreak, and the occasional combination of the two subjects.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

Five AM: We do most of our band promotion through social media. For shows, we like to post fliers and go out to spread the word.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

Five AM: It’s great now that streaming services are available. We weren’t part of the industry before streaming so we’re pretty fortunate in that respect. Spotify and Apple Music give up-and-coming artists a fighting chance, especially with algorithms that favor musicians putting out bangers. If you can get some traffic on a song, the sky’s the limit.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

Five AM: A Little Less Sixteen Candles… by Fall Out Boy. That song smacks. The structure is perfect.

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

Five AM: People who chew with their mouths open. People who talk through movies. People in general. Empty Juul pods.

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

Five AM: The first time we heard the crowd singing our lyrics back to us. That felt unreal.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

Five AM: We’ve got a lot of exciting and explosive music coming down the pipe this year. We’re currently just planning out the timeline for the releases. Be on the lookout!

PD: Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.

Five AM: We’re playing a festival in Davenport, IA on February 15th. The proceeds are going to two good causes: RAINN and Hope For The Day. It’s going to be a blast.
