Finding Aurora – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (

PD. What type of artist are you?
FA. We’re a 4 piece garage rock band, I think it took us a while to figure out what to kind of put ourselves in as a genre but we think we fit there.

PD. Tell us a brief history of yourself.
FA. Myself (Sam), Nick and Luc have all grown up here in Newport for pretty much all our lives. Lloyd is just down the road from us in Cardiff. I met Nick and Luc through high school around 2016/2015 through doing school concerts and that kind of thing which was a bunch of fun, we formed this band around late 2017 into a bedroom project at Nick’s place after work and school. We were pretty young and it was just fun to get together and do something of our own after spending the last 5 years of my life dreaming of being in a band.

PD. Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
FA. We’re all inspired by a lot of different musicians and bands, I think a lot of our youth and the bands we group up listening to have and still have an impact on the way we write and put songs together. For me its definitely bands like AC/DC, Foo Fighters, Black Sabbath, Nirvana and even ABBA. Simplicity has always been an attraction to me I think, I really like things to get to their essence musically. Non-musical influences, I think I’m inspired and influenced by a lot of normal people who are happy and proud of what they do. No matter how big or small that achievement is, I think it’s so important now more than ever to find happiness and pride in yourself no matter who you are.

PD. What are your dreams and goals?
FA. To never step doing this, it’s the 1 thing that keeps me awake at night and keeps me alive through the day. It is my life and I couldn’t imagine life without it, it’s so important to us all.

PD. Who writes your songs, what are they about?
FA. Sam (me) writes the songs for the band, previously a lot of the songs were written about topics and never touched on a personal side. I felt that I needed to explore this personal side of my lyrics, as I’ve always loved truth in music and songs that sing about real things and connect to the heart. I think that’s honestly the most powerful thing in music, it amazes me still to this day. The songs now are exploring that personal side, with ‘The Last Call’ our latest single directly focusing on the de-attachment from toxic people and those kind of relationships with people in life, I’ve felt a lot of that in my life in my teens so it felt great to get it into a track like this, I love it and its definitely something that will be prominent in our future releases.

PD. How do you promote your band and shows?
FA. All through social media, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and all that goodness. I think social media is great in some ways, and it helps us as a band a lot. It’s a very powerful tool, I (Sam) usually put our gig posters together. I love the creative control we can have as a band and I think it’s important that artists have input on these things.

PD. What do you think about downloading music online?
FA. I’m all for it, I love vinyl and physical formats too. I’ve been buying records since I was around 12/13 I think. I must’ve spent a fortune on LPs during the last 8 years. But yeah, I am all for streaming and the accessibility it gives to music lovers, I just wish the pay for streams would be sorted as it makes me sad to see the numbers so low.

PD. What song do you wish you’d written and why?
FA. Debris by The Faces, they’re a band I discovered during the beginning of lockdown and have now become one of my favourite bands of all time. That song Debris is just gorgeous and beautiful in every way I could imagine, I love it.

PD. What are some of your pet peeves?
FA. When someone walks in the room and leaves the door open or the light on, always haha.

PD. What is your proudest moment in music?
FA. I think our proudest moment as a band was selling out our hometown for the first time, and the latest single we recorded. I feel like we have found who we are as a band and its real good, I love it and the fact I’m in love with it is all I could ask for. I’m proud of everything we do, I’m in love with what we’re doing.

PD. So what are you working on at the moment?
FA. Brand new music, all new music. We’ve entered this new wave of songwriting, and it’s exciting. The response we have had for the latest single has been nothing but exciting and we all feel blessed by it. We’re cooking up some bangers for new tracks now in the studio and it’s all just riffs, these songs are gonna be so fun to play live. We’re all stupidly excited to bring this new era of the band to the stage and on the record.

PD. What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?
FA. All of our current releases are available to download/stream everywhere. Apple Music, Spotify, Deezer and all that goodness!
