Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: What type of artist are you?
FOR: Hi, I’m the songwriter, singer, and instrumentalist of Fields of Regret, a Belgian-based Horror metal band.
PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.
FOR: Before I started this band I worked as a producer for Basick records. I had the honor to work with people like Marco Minneman (Kreator), Terry Bozio (drummer Frank Zappa), Adam Dice (Puff Daddy) and Bruno Meeus (Wizard of Oz). Before Fields of Regret I was also a member of Lakland, a gothic metal band.
PD: Musical influences?
FOR: I really like the horror voice of Vincent Price and I was inspired by the vocals on his performances. Musically, I’m inspired by dark metal bands like Type O Negative, Black Sabbath, and Alice Cooper.
PD: What are your dreams and goals?
FOR: It’s difficult. On one hand I would love to perform the songs live at festivals and underground clubs. On the other hand I love my work as a songwriter and a producer so much that it would be very hard to choose between both. When I go for live music, I wanna go all in; not just musicians on a stage but a real theatrical show. I think I will let the listeners decide.
PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?
FOR: I write and play all the songs by myself. I’m mostly inspired by things that happen in my direct environment. People I see on the street, news facts like #metoo movement, but also autobiographical themes like my bipolar disorder.
PD: How do you promote your band and shows?
FOR: Our band is promoted by CSquared music who are doïng an amazing job! Certainly our personal agent Effy, she chases our goals like it were her own.
PD: What do you think about downloading music online?
FOR: I don’t have a problem with downloading music. Everyone got used to listenening to music for free and nothings gonna change that. And I don’t think crisis in music sales is caused by free downloading, but by the fact that everyone can record his own songs and put them online for free. Before downloading started you needed a record label to release your music. So you got a selection in quality. Now everyone puts his music online, so listeners get overwhelmed with new bands. Lots of them suck so after a while you stop searching for new bands and just listen to the popular ones.
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
FOR: “The Black Widow” by Alice Cooper. It’s a song that has been reinvented by Cooper a hundred times and every time it works. With heavy guitars, acoustic, piano… every time, it’s one of the highlights of the show. The dark voice, the rhythm, the chords… they all match in an incredible way.
PD: What are some of your pet peeves?
FOR: I hate it when people don’t keep their word. For me a given word is a holy word. And I don’t respect people who break it. They are my enemies forever.
PD: What is your proudest moment in music?
FOR: I once had the chance to write the music for a very big firework show. The music was performed live, synchronized with the arrows. It was an incredible spectacle for more than 40,000 excited people.
PD: So what are you working on at the moment?
FOR: On 18 november Fields of Regret releases their debut EP, with 5 songs on it. I am really looking for the reactions. It has a quite refreshing horror sound. I love this sound, but I hope many others will also do.
PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?
FOR: The music is online on all big platforms like spotify, youtube, deezer, Itunes,… . And of course on our facebook https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100070697956176 or youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC79pFhH6dW0QlDoGUtv2-Sg
