The Official Music video for “False Awakening”
Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: How would you describe yourself or your band as an artist, tell us briefly about your background – i.e. where you’re from, how you came to make music, etc.?
FAM: Feed After Midnite is a 5 piece Hard Rock/Metal band based out of Ottawa, Ontario Canada. The band was formed in March 2018 when longtime friends Marc, Denis and Yvon decided to submit a demo they did for a local Battle of the Bands contest and were chosen to play one of the shows. Problem was the guys didn’t really have a band, the song they submitted was only the 3 of them doing all the instruments and vocals. They recruited the singer from their previous band, Gunfighter Pedestrian, to be the vocalist and recruited Dylan DeRepentigny to be on Bass. The show was supposed to be a one off but the guys had such a blast doing it that they just said “let’s start a band”. Yvon(current vocalist) at the time was the band’s drummer, became the new vocalist as the other vocalist didn’t really fit the style and direction the band wanted to go. The band recruited Dominic Chaumont to be the new drummer.
They played their first show as Feed after Midnite in July 2018. In late 2019, Marc, Denis and Yvon began writing some new material when it was decided that it would be best to amicably part ways with Dominic. Sean Bolster(current drummer) joined the band in 2020 after answering an ad on Facebook. In the summer of 2020 the band entered the studio for the very first time, to record the songs Out of Time and Running Man. In the fall of 2020 both songs were released and received a positive reaction.
Out of Time was picked up by Ottawa’s Rebel radio station and was on regular rotation for almost 2 years. The next single, Sweet Embrace, was released in late 2021. In March 2022, the band entered the studio to record their first EP. Recording was completed in late Summer 2022 and was released on November 25 of that year. In August 2022, bassist Dylan decided to part ways with the band to go on to do some other project. The band recruited Shane Fraser shortly after to become the band’s new bassist.
PD: Who and what inspires you to make music, both in terms of musical and other influences? What do you like to write about in your songs?
FAM: Songwriting for us is always a collective effort. The majority of our material comes from recordings we make of our improvisational jams. The sound of the improvisational jams has evolved since 2018. Early on hard rock/classic metal like Metallica or Faith No More were more prominent aspects of the sounds. With the addition of Sean in 2020 the newer stuff is heavier and a bit more aggressive.
Sounds more like Metalcore or groove metal similar to KillSwitch Engage, Pantera or In Flames. Yvon and really all of us, love all things that are horror or sci-fi related from the 80’s and 90’s. Movie Directors like John Carpenter(They Live), James Cameron(Terminator), Sam Raimi(Evil Dead), George A Romero(Dawn of the Dead) have certainly been an influence on the themes Yvon writes about.
PD: What are your aspirations as an artist?
FAM: Everyone in the band is a music lover, we create music that we like to hear. Don’t get us wrong, we find it validating when people appreciate what we produce. That’s why we publish it. So our first aspiration as artists is to produce good quality music. We are taking more of the D.I.Y. approach to the band vs a more established corporate route. None of us currently makes a living doing music, though the band is at a level where we mostly fund our endeavours from ticket and merchandise sales. We certainly aspire to build this into something bigger than just a local band but also try to keep in mind, not to lose sight of the fact that happiness comes from the process and not necessarily the end result.
PD: What is the proudest moment in your music career so far?
FAM: To date our proudest moment has to be seeing how our EP “The Hunger” has been received by fans particularly on our YouTube channel, we have seen 100+ increase in new subscribers and over 6000 views of the song “ Book of the Fallen” in 2 months!
PD: Promoting one’s music is such a challenge these days, especially with so many new artists emerging from bedrooms in the day of the home studio. How is that going?
FAM: I would agree, the internet age has revolutionised the music industry. Removing barriers that existed before tools like social media, allowed artists to interact directly with their fans en masse. You have to be more careful now how you spend your advertising money. There are lots of online promo companies offering X number of streams for X dollars. We are happy with the amount of success we have achieved so far. In terms of audience growth, It has been organic and we believe that it will continue this way as long as we consistently output quality content. We believe the journey is perhaps more important than the destination and that our fans are drawn to our dedication to authenticity and quality.
PD: And how do you book and promote your live shows and tours? Any performances coming up?
FAM: The local music scene here is pretty steady, with enough venues and interest, there’s always shows going on. Over the years of playing live we have developed relationships with a couple promoters who regularly contact us to take shows. Most of the promotion for these shows is social media and word of mouth.
We have two upcoming shows booked:
The Space Between single release party with Crooked Mirrors, and Feed After Midnite March 10 2023 at The Rainbow Bistro Ottawa Ont. tickets available on Eventbrite.com
Feed After Midnite, As We Suffer, Hyena, and Dead Velvet April 1, 2023 at Cafe Dekcuf in Ottawa Ont. Tickets available from Pandamonium Promotions or DM us
PD: What do you think about downloading music online? What about streaming sites like Spotify?
FAM: The internet has changed and will continue to change the way we all do things. like I mentioned above how barriers have been removed in terms of accessibility to technology to create professional quality content that is a good part. Personally as a music lover it’s become so easy to find new stuff regularly so that aspect is good too. I think every artist would like to see better compensation from streaming services. I think ultimately, decentralisation will change the game in favour of the independent artist with web3 tools like smart contracts and NFTs.
PD: Is there anything you don’t like about the music industry, which you would change if you could?
FAM: De-centralization is a recurring theme in the last couple decades or so. With people taking the solutions to what ails them health wise more and more back to a holistic approach and into their own hands. The creation and rise of cryptocurrency signals people’s desires to take back control of their finances away from government corruption with “sound money” like Bitcoin. So true with the music industry I think the Internet has already revolutionised the industry with social media allowing artists to interact more directly with their audience. Now with the ease at which artists can self produce and distribute high quality content the need for a record/production company is becoming more of an option and less necessity. So the thing that I would like to see change is in fact happening.
PD: So, what are you working on at the moment?
FAM: This year we have a few things that we would like to accomplish. We’ve played lots locally in Ottawa so we feel it’s time to branch out. We have our sights set on playing an out of town show possibly in Montreal,Kingston or maybe Toronto nothing solid yet we will see. We want to release some new music by the fall or winter. We would love to play an outdoor festival type show, nothing solid yet. Overall we just want to continue to work on growing our band and enjoy the process!
