Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: How would you describe yourself or your band as an artist?
ED: Eternal Drak is a Thrash Black metal band with some Groove-Latino beats
PD: Can you tell us briefly about your background – i.e. where you’re from, how you came to make music, etc.
ED: The band began in Colombia in 1997, we were two brothers trying to make some metal music with not more than one cheap guitar and one simple drum. We learned and we had fun, for almost ten years we played with another 2 friends who joined the band in 1998. We recorded our EP and the firs LP. The band splits in 2007. In 2019 our Warhammer drummer passed away and we decided to pay tribute to him by releasing a new LP. Already from Canada, the vocalist and guitarist Drakar reorganizes the band and resumes the project releasing 2 more LPs in 2021 and 2022.
PD: Who and what inspires you to make music, both in terms of musical and other influences? What do you like to write about in your songs?
ED: Family and friends who already made music in some way brought us closer to the instruments and to the taste for music, but like most, reaching a group of friends who introduce you to metal and share your way of seeing life makes that we want to be part of the movement. Regarding the lyrics, from the beginning we considered that metal is a way to express ourselves but above all to criticize what we don’t like, aspects such as anti-religion were very present in our beginnings. currently we extend the criticism to things like society, the economy, and dogmas. Criticizing what torments us is what we are passionate about.
PD: What are your aspirations as an artist?
ED: Bands like Sepultura, Slayer, and Immortal strongly influenced us to make our music.
PD: What is the proudest moment in your music career so far?
ED: In the year 2000, the band made a first Video Clip, this video won the prize for the best metal video of the year on the CityTv television channel. this award gave us a lot of recognition in the country and launched us as a professional band
PD: Promoting one’s music is such a challenge these days, especially with so many new artists emerging from bedrooms in the day of the home studio. How is that going?
ED: the competition is very great nowadays, the necessary tools to self-produce are available to many more artists. This is something that, like everything in life, also generates many opportunities for those who know how to take advantage of them, social networks and streaming are there to be used, studying them and using them is something that Eternal Drak has done successfully. We have concentrated on Spotify and that is where we have seen very good results. Many artists resist change and that is where they fail.
PD: And how do you book and promote your live shows and tours? Any performances coming up?
ED: Eternal Drak is currently a studio band, we are adjusting the lineup to be able to go out on the public scene. We hope to do it in 2023.
PD: What do you think about downloading music online? What about streaming sites like Spotify?
ED: The free download of our music is something that does not concern us, we consider that a person who downloads one of our songs is someone who later will make purchases or stream our songs. Regarding platforms like Spotify, we believe that they have opened the way for many artists who previously would have needed a major label to reach the public, that is very positive, however the value in money perceived by us is very low.
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
ED: There is a song that both musically and lyrically we feel close. 666 World divided by Kreator.
PD: Is there anything you don’t like about the music industry, which you would change if you could?
ED: access to fm stations and their metal programs is still something difficult to access for most artists. Programming in the vast majority of cases is controlled by commercial guidelines, musical themes are heard that due to their low quality should not be there, however they are programmed thanks to the machinery of the big labels and the payola that persists.
PD: So, what are you working on at the moment?
ED: Right now we are working hard on two facets, the rehearsals to be able to play live again and the pre-production of our 5th album for 2023.
PD: Where can we learn more about you and buy your music/merch online?
ED: The best place to get to know us is our official website, www.eternaldrak.com, there you can even download various themes for free. One way to support us is through social networks, facebook, instagram and twitter, you will find us as @eternaldrak in any of the three networks.
