Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: What type of artist are you?
DVL: We are a heavy metal band.
PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.
DVL: Most of us met up in music college and started making music together from there. Since then we’ve made an album endorsed by Creative Scotland, supported bands like In This Moment and Jinjer and got nominated for a Scottish Alternative Music Award, which was pretty neat.
PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
DVL: We have a ton of influences from all over the joint! Musically I’d say bands like A7X, Pantera and Megadeth all the way over to artists like Eminem, Billie Eilish and City and Colour. Non musically I think Horror plays a big part in our music. We’re all big horror movie/video game fans and a lot of those things have influenced our writing for sure.
PD: What are your dreams and goals?
DVL: I mean the dream is to be waking up on a tour bus every day and knowing that at night you’re gonna be playing to a room full of people who love your music. I’d imagine that’s probably one of the best feelings in the world, to just be playing your music for a living! Also playing main stage Download would be huge. We aspire to one day do both!
PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?
DVL: Alan and I (Ryan) tend to write the songs, whether that’s together or going off and writing our own songs then bringing what we have back to the table. Our new album is a sort of concept album in that each song tells a different short story about things like fantasy, cults and what not but it’s all tied together behind a central theme of mental health.
PD: How do you promote your band and shows?
DVL: We tend to be most active on our Twitter account but we also use Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and pretty much every form of social media! Best way to get the news out there for sure.
PD: What do you think about downloading music online?
DVL: I think it’s great! Having all the music you could possibly want at your fingertips is a pretty sweet deal. It’s a great way to find new bands you hadn’t heard of before too!
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
DVL: This answer would differ between all of us and it’s a really hard question but for me personally I think I’d go for Welcome to the Jungle – Guns ‘N’ Roses. That song is perfect in so many ways buy its always the lyrics that get me. Like I have no idea how he came up with that stuff. Absolute gold.
PD: What are some of your pet peeves?
DVL: Musically or in general?! I honestly don’t really have any pet peeves. I know some people don’t like loud eating and all that jazz but nothing really bothers me. Actually I hate people who walk and smoke at the same time. Ya know they’re in front of you breathing their gross smoke and you end up getting a face full of it? That makes me genuinely angry.
PD: What is your proudest moment in music?
DVL: When we got nominated for a Scottish Alternative Music Award for our first album I was over the moon. Just to feel recognised was a great. I think our absolute proudest moment though was when we supported Jinjer. That’s the biggest show we’ve ever played, it was absolutely packed from the front to the back of the venue. People actually couldn’t move. That was insane. Seeing people go crazy to your songs is always overwhelming.
PD: So what are you working on at the moment?
DVL: At the moment we’re running a PR campaign for our upcoming album Hush, which is out on May 27th! Then we’ll hopefully get touring around November/December. We also just released the music video for our first single Eternity, so be sure to check that out!
PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?
DVL: Eternity is available on all streaming platforms right now! Check out our Facebook page, Instagram or Twitter and they’ll all direct you to our website where there’s a link to pre save our album to. But for good measure, here’s the link to pre save our album: https://orcd.co/dvlhush
