DUNES were invented in the warmer periods of 2016 by several earth dwellers poorly masquerading as human beings in the city of Newcastle.
They play dessert-riff-blues-tinted-disco-tinged-rock, which draws on influences such as Millionaire, Soulwax, Queens of the Stone Age, Death From Above 1979 and Talking Heads.
They wasted no time getting amongst the live scene of their native Newcastle and further afield and have shared the stage with the likes of Idles, Waheela, Tragedy, TCHOTCHKE, Servers, Gorilla Warfare and Cocaine Piss.
DUNES have been booked to play at Tramlines Festival in Sheffield and Solfest in Cumbria during the summer and are due to embark on a mini tour late September/early October with Servers and The Recovery.
Their first two releases ‘Love From Below’ and ‘Fresh Hell’ both received airplay on BBC Newcastle’s Introducing show.
DUNES are set to record their debut EP during May 2017 with Graham Thompson who has previously worked with Frankie and the Heartstrings, Jimmy Floyd Hasslebaind, Kubicheck and Jinn.
Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views
1 What type of artist are you?~
Hi Pete, we’re DUNES, we’re a Rock and Roll band from Newcastle Upon Tyne.
2 Tell us the brief history of yourself.~
DUNES were invented in the warmer periods of 2016 by several earth dwellers poorly masquerading as human beings in the city of Newcastle. We play dessert-riff-blues-tinted-disco-tinged-rock.
3 Who are your musical and non-musical influences?~
Musical influences are things like: Millionaire, Soulwax, Queens of the Stone Age, Death From Above 1979 and Talking Heads. Non-Musical Influences are Bill Murray and booze, although not necessarily in that order.
4 What are your dreams and goals?~
Dreams?; Mainly ones about getting caught in lifts and this one time I was getting a tattoo of my cat. Goals; world domination and a sponsorship deal with Buckfast wouldn’t go amiss.
5 Who writes your songs, what are they about?~
The two singers/guitarists have done the bulk of the writing, no idea what they’re banging on about most of the time to be honest but one song is about a volley ball and its unrequited love with Tom Hanks. No, but really, it’s called ‘Wilson’.
6 How do you promote your band and shows?~
Sometimes we stand around bus stations shouting at people, the rest of the time we rely on beautiful posters and annoying all the people we’ve ever met ever via social media.

7 What do you think about downloading music online?~
Downloading music online is fine, but vinyl’s are better than you’re f*cking life if all you know is MP3’s.
8 What’s your outlook on the record industry today?~
It’s changed beyond all comprehension from what it used to be but that’s not a bad thing, the power is now with the bands and the fans. It’s over-saturated sure but I think this just pushes people to go further.
It’s over-saturated sure but I think this just pushes people to go further.
9 What’s your claim to fame?~
One of us was one of the Teletubbies for a brief stint around 2002 until an unfortunate incident involving a drug fuelled escapade that resulted in a soiled ‘Tubby suit’ and a restraining order request from both Chuckle Brothers.
10 What are some of your pet peeves?~
People. Especially Katie Hopkins, she can suck a bollock.
11 What are the biggest obstacles for artists?~
Remaining sober and lack of access to printers.
12 Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.~
Our next gig is at West Street Live in Sheffield, Thursday 22nd of June and it’s free. You should be there because we know where you live and our dads are proper tough.
