DevilSpeak – Interview

DevilSpeak – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

PD: What type of artist are you?

DS: DevilSpeak is a 5 piece Death/Thrash Metal band hailing from Cape Town, South Africa

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

DS: Azailyah and De Wet met first, Derrick was invited to join next on bass, after some time Jarred joined on vocals and then after some more time Francois joined on drums and DevilSpeak was born in Aug 2014 and we played our first live show together in Mar 2015.

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

DS: Slayer, The Black Dahlia Murder, At The Gates, Sepultura

Art, Movies and Books

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

DS: Dreams – play shows worldwide

Goals – keep doing DevilSpeak our own way on our own terms

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

DS: The songs always start with some riffs, this then gets massaged into a song over quite some time in the practice room, everyone being allowed to have their input and say, and us only saying it’s done enough to play live when everyone is feeling comfy with it.  The lyrics determine the “meaning” and they will vary depending on what the music inspires Jarred to get writing about.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

DS: Promotion is mostly done online via social media for things, but for shows in Cape Town we put on we will also usually have some posters and flyers printed and get those put up at places.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

DS: Bandcamp is wonderful for this, downloading illegally we don’t think is cool but at the same time it is a way music spreads these days.  Less enamoured with Spotify, Deezer and other places people can rent music from monthly.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

DS: Can’t say we ever think about this!

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

DS: Places taking a very long time to respond to emails sent

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

DS: Opening Metal4Africa’s Winterfest’15 in Cape Town in August 2015, a dream come true for all of us to play a Metal4Africa fest, and we’ve gone on to play a few more since.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

DS: A new single to be recorded as soon as we can get back to living life normally again.

PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?

DS: All our music is available digitally on Bandcamp for “name your price”, we also have a physical EP CD and other merch available on our Bandcamp to purchase as well, so go have a look – https://devilspeakofficial.bandcamp.com/

The EP, entitled “See Evil Hear Evil Speak Evil” consists of 3 tracks and will be released before the end of 2017.
