Death In Paradise – Interview

PD: What type of artist are you?

DIP: I guess one can call me an overall artist. Predominantly I am a guitar player, i write songs, sing them…I never knew of, or imagine a life without being a part of a band or something musically oriented or artistic really…

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

DIP: I am originally from Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean, I was just the typical kid that never truly fit in and immersed himself into playing guitar and writing songs, starting at the age of 13. I played many years in the local scene there…always steering forward, I toured the US, lived and played in bands in NYC, New Orleans, London…kinda brings me here now…yep, it’s been a journey to say the least.

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

DIP: Musically, my influences are very eclectic and can change daily…. but a few main ones off the top of my head are Guns n Roses, Soundgarden, Deftones, The Pogues, Slayer, STP, Highly Suspect….man the list goes on, that question is always a tough one! Have you ever “Drunk Youtubed” at a friend’s place? haha, you’d be surprised to see the shit that comes up. Non-Musical Influences are being on weeklong benders, long walks alone in the early hours of the morning, you know, inspiring stuff like that.

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

DIP: To play the biggest festivals and shows for thousands of people, to put out great albums with my band and tour the world.

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

DIP: The songs I write, they range from life experiences to relationships and sex, to substance abuse to trials and tribulations of certain perspectives.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

DIP: As far as promoting, we are hoping to play as many shows and get more people tuned into Death in Paradise and my music…Promoting shows, from grassroots vibes like word of mouth, flyers to social media.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

DIP: I don’t think I have an opinion on that really, if I connect and like a certain band or artist……downloading is just not enough for me…I want to sink back, crank the volume, look through the album sleeves and pictures, read the credits… know?

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

DIP: “I am the highway” by Chris Cornell. it’s a song that speaks volumes for me personally.

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

DIP: Just simple things like, ok, I had this bassplayer one who would never arrive for rehearsals or shows on time. so I guess that would go under “being late”. Also, arrogance and trying to have a conversation with someone who won’t let you get a word in…

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

DIP: Sitting back with my Engineer, Nuno Junqueira and listening to the songs I recorded for the new album “Sacrificing the Goat” fuck, that felt so good…and hearing the songs for the first time in all its power blasting on the in-house studio speakers….

PD: So, what are you working on at the moment?

DIP: It’s been a bit of a crazy train for me at the moment personally but, keeping sane in the rehearsal studio and getting all the songs from the album mixed and mastered.

PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?

DIP: We’ve just released our first single “Closer” with the Animal Farm Label. Its available on Spotify at the moment.  Also, be sure to look out for more releases soon and  Death in Paradise’s debut record…”Sacrificing the Goat” hopefully early next year…thanks.
