Dead Soul Alliance
The world of death metal has been on an incredible run this year so far, as release after release comes to light of the darkest and most vicious heavy music. Adding corpses to the pile are Ottawa’s Dead Soul Alliance, a two-piece with three slabs of concrete-thick old school death metal to their name, the latest entitled Slaves to the Apocalypse.
The project is helmed by Wolven Deadsoul, whose vocals flip between cavernous bellows and pterodactyl screams in the vein of their Scandinavian cousins. Audio snippets are used to great effect to give the lyrical topics vocals context, such as a tirade of anti-religious rhetoric on “Worlds Within Worlds”. Meanwhile, Wolven’s other role as guitarist puts a spotlight on stunning melodic work that echoes Gothic-era Paradise Lost and ferocious riffing that fits right in with the greats of the 80s and 90s. Drummer Shawn Carrier puts in a stellar performance as well, capturing the essence of each of the six tracks as he rages on the kit.
What Dead Soul Alliance achieve is far from reinventing the wheel, but Slaves to the Apocalypse certainly leaves the neck sore after listening.
The album will be released on August 16th on cassette from Dawning Septic Productions.
