DARLIN – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

PD: What type of artist are you?

DARLIN – The type everyone should listen to! We are a pop rock outfit at heart, with a lean towards the mixing of the sounds of the 70’s and 80s like Yacht Rock, with the more modern pop rock band sounds of the past 10 years

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

DARLIN – We came together after all being in a lot of fairly known bands individually, and Dan had a lot of songs written that he had been meaning to use, and was desperate to start a band with his lovely wife Sarah, as they wanted to sing together more than anything. They then met Rob and each new member jumped on one after the other and after 2 years of planning in secret, getting our act together behind the scenes, we are finally ready to unveil everything we have been up to, swinging for every opportunity we get.

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

Fleetwood Mac, Michael McDonald, Christopher Cross, Paramore, Journey, the list goes on and on, we love all music really but I have my heart in the classics. Non musically we’re very inspired by film particularly, Wes Anderson, Stanley Kubrick and Tarantino, we fall in love with a lot of things all the time, we are dreamers at heart and it doesn’t take much to get us inspired … or distracted haha

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

DARLIN – Get our music to reach as many people as possible by any and all means, play some great shows and enjoy it all, as we’ve had good success in the past within the industry, but never took the time to smell the roses, DARLIN is all about trying to be a big inclusive, pink, camp party and being present, I think that the world is very serious right now, and the music out right now is kind of keeping pace with that almost ‘we’re all doomed and edgy’. For us DARLIN’s biggest goal is to serve as escapism, a place to go where you share common ground with others, let loose and switch off from all the nonsense we are poisoned with everyday, and have some damn fun !

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

DARLIN – I (Dan) write the majority of them and then the other members all add their skills too and improve them massively, I adore this kind of quality control that we have.

All of the songs are about lots of different things, regrets, shame, love and death, friendship and commentary on the lives of others, I try to write little stories and hope that people put their own meaning to them.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

DARLIN – Vigorously haha ! Mostly online through word of mouth, PR etc, but in 2023 we’ll very much be playing shows and spreading the good word everywhere, we don’t need to be the biggest band in the world, but we’d love to carve out a following that can enjoy what we create for years to come.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

DARLIN – We love the convenience because we’re human, and hate the remuneration because we’re musicians, it’s here to stay now and it’s the future. Vinyl is wicked, we’ll admit we never loved CD’s though so glad it’s mainly just streaming and vinyl now, although I miss the excitement of getting that physical thing on release days, it’s all so easy now that some magic has been lost, I think we have a long way to go to make the current model work for musicians.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

DARLIN – Christopher Cross – Sailing, it’s so damn beautiful and we just get totally swept away when I listen to it. Dreams by Fleetwood Mac would also fall into this same category.

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

DARLIN – Waiting, for anything, ever

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

DARLIN – We’ve done mad amazing things in our musical careers (BBC Radio 1, Supporting Paramore, Getting Synced on TNA Wrestling, touring with Emarosa and A Day to Remember), but we genuinely believe the proudest moments are yet to come and will be via DARLIN, we try and write big tunes with big heart and hopefully we have a good shot.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

DARLIN – So much music, so much content, we treat the band like an influencer treats their YouTube Channel, we never want to let up the pace, and will be putting new music and content in nearly every month left of 2022 and all of 2023

PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?

Spotify, YouTube, Insta, TikTok all the platforms, our current single GOOD BAD VIBES is out now, and our next single VELVET is landing 18/11/2022, get involved !
