Cyclopean Walls – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

PD: What type of artist are you?

CW: The interesting type J

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

CW: The band Cyclopean Walls was created as an international metal project led by Greek guitarist Yiannis Tziallas. There was a first release in 2020, the digital EP “Embrace The Mythos”, under Yiannis’ name and, one year later, with the collaboration of Steel Gallery Records a full length album named “Enter The Dreamlands” is to be released on October 29th 2021. Being a steady team with two great musicians, Raphael Gazal (vocals) and Jonas Schütz (drums), Yiannis composed 5 new tracks and re-recorded the EP’s material which is now part of the full-length album. The project runs under the name CYCLOPEAN WALLS since 2021.

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

CW: The heavy metal music in general, bands such as Warlord, Fates Warning, Heir Apparent, Titan Force, Candlemass but also literature; sci-fi, horror and epic fantasy.

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

CW: To play and tour with friends and bands we admire; to have the time, the energy and the inspiration to create and to record new music whenever it’s possible.

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

CW: For our debut album “Enter The Dreamlands” all songs were written by Yiannis Tziallas. The entire album was based onto Lovecraftian literature and we tried to deliver the magic and dark atmosphere of the original text with our lyrics.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

CW: Well, the project was created during the corona pandemic, so there wasn’t much of organising shows the last two years. Now that it seems like the stages will be opening again, we have teamed up with Angels PR Worldwide Music Promotion and of course we try to use the internet as much as possible to promote and book our gigs.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

CW: I have no problem with that. I believe that we cannot avoid it, so the bands have to be smart: We have to upgrade the quality of our physical product in order to offer something that will be much more than a simple CD or a vinyl. The fans will have the opportunity to buy our stuff if they want to connect with the band and we will give them back a high-quality product, which will surpass any digital download or streaming service. We are very happy that our company Steel Gallery Records shares the same high quality standards with us and that the media it produces are always of exceptional quality.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

CW: Oh god that’s a hard one… Every day I’d choose a different song. I guess that today I wish I had composed “Under The Oak” by Candlemass. Such an epic, beautiful, larger than life storytelling experience…

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

CW: Know it alls…. I can’t stand them. Also, racists, fascists and the relevant garbage that re-emerging in Europe. They’re making watching the news so annoying…

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

CW: Every time someone tells me that our music touched him or meant something to him or her. That’s very gratifying and I guess I am always feeling proud in moments such as these.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

CW: Right now, we’re transcribing the entire album in order to start the rehearsals for live gigs. It’s possible that there’ll be a music sheet edition of “Enter The Dreamlands” in 2022. I am also working on a special package which will include a book and a CD and we’re discussing with Infinity Studios the vinyl master, as it is very important for us to have a vinyl version of the album soon.

PD: Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.

CW: The only thing I can say is that we will be sharing the stage in 2022-23 with a band that is legendary in the European underground progressive scene and with who we share the same Lovecraftian passion… We are organising it; we are trying to be efficient and work fast. I believe that we can make it happen and I hope that we’ll soon be able to announce more. I bet you will be interested very much to be there. I wish I could tell you more, but I can’t yet…
