Cortex Complex Interview
Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD. What type of artist are you?
CC. A Sci-Fi themed Progressive Rock/Metal virtual band!
PD. Tell us the brief history of yourself.
CC. I personally had the idea for Sci-Fi virtual band in mind for many years before we started making the first, instrumental, album, titled “TheFinal Great Awakening,” with Andreas (Drummer) in 2015 as part of a university project. Later on, Andreas moved out of the country and even though he remained as a session drummer, Cortex Complex was now my own solo project. I hired Mike and Valentina for the vocals and put out “Memoirs of an Apocalypse” which is our latest album
PD. Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
CC. Musically it would probably be Prog bands such as Dream Theater and Opeth as well as guitar virtuosos such as Steve Vai and Joe Satriani! As a non-musical influence, the film “The Matrix” had a huge impact on the concept of the band!
PD. What are your dreams and goals?
CC. Just like any band, we want to reach as many people as we can and get as many fans as possible.
PD. Who writes your songs, what are they about?
CC. I write all the music and most of the lyrics of the band. The songs are about the story of various Humanoids which traveled from the future to the present in order to warn humanity about an imminent machine apocalypse! Our newest release is a concept album telling the story of all the events leading up to that apocalypse!
PD. How do you promote your band and shows?
CC. Mainly through social media.
PD. What do you think about downloading music online?
CC. If one does it legally, that’s awesome and pretty convenient (in relation to buying CDs). If one does it illegally, he should know that he’s really hurting the smaller artists trying to make a living out of this. Enjoying someone’s hard work without paying is just, wrong.
PD. What song do you wish you’d written and why?
CC. Master of Puppets by Metallica probably. It’s just such a great song. I am pretty sure it’s the song that got me into playing music back in the day.
PD. What are some of your pet peeves?
CC. When the soundcheck doesn’t start on time and song with too much auto-tune!
PD. What is your proudest moment in music?
CC. Finishing this album! It’s been a very complicated process and I was basically in charge of every single thing. I had to learn how to record and mix tracks properly, I had to learn how to publish music, where to print the merch, how to get reviews, etc. Just going through all that and releasing the album after a year of work was a great moment.
PD. So what are you working on at the moment?
CC. We are currently working on bringing you new animation videos for the final three songs of the album by the end of the Summer! I also started working on the third album, but that’s probably going to be released in 2019!
PD. Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.
CC. We currently don’t plan on leaving the studio. The logistics of a live show for this particular band are quite complicated relative to the average band. Hopefully one day it will happen though!
