CONSTRAINT – Interview

CONSTRAINT – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (

PD: What type of artist are you?

C: We are a symphonic/progressive metal band from Italy. We like to experiment, looking for new stylistic and musical languages.

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

C: We are a group of friends with different backgrounds and influences. Constraint was formed in 2011, playing symphonic metal covers. The band wanted to take a step ahead and produce original material, so in 2012 our first demo Illusion of a Dream was released. In 2016 Enlightened by Darkness, our first full-length, was released worldwide. After that we underwent a major line-up change. In 2017 we mainly performed live gigs around Italy to promote our first album, then, in the following two years, we started writing again and our second album Tides of Entropy saw the light in march 2020.

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

C: Our musical influences are pretty wide, being that our backgrounds and musical developments have followed very different routes: we range mostly from progressive metal (Dream Theater, Tool, Symphony X, Haken), djent, symphonic metal to classical and even some folk. Non-musical ones are mainly literature, philosophy, science, and our life experience.

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

C: Our main goal is to share our music and emotions with as many people as possible. We also want to play gigs all over the world, because they allow us to get in touch with people and share our feelings with them.

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

C: All of us contribute to the creation process. Some songs started from a drum fill, others from a guitar riff, others from a vocal line. Once started, everyone usually gives his own contribution to it, so it really is a collective effort. Lyrically, in this album they are mostly about introspection, digging into one’s deepest feelings.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

C: Usually we promote our band mainly through social media: our Facebook and Instagram pages, webzines, and so on, but we recently signed a deal with Mike de Coene from HardLife Promotion, who is doing a lot of press promotion for the new album and making us known through online media, podcasts, radio shows and interview. Due to the coronavirus crisis there are no shows for the time being, but under normal circumstances we promote them through our social media channels and the venues promote them too through their channels.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

C: As long as the artists’ rights are not violated, i.e. with piracy, it’s fine. We still prefer to experience music in the physical form with CDs but a lot of times digital versions are just more convenient to get being two mouse clicks apart from you.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

C: The next one we will write! 😛 joking aside, we always try to innovate so we prefer to look at what has not yet been written.

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

C: They are probably two: the live concerts and the ending of the composition process of an album. The former of course is the moment in which we can connect the most with the people that resonate with our music: it’s amazing to see and feel that joy they convey. The latter is just incredibly rewarding: completing a chapter in our musical career, that we can listen from start to finish, is really satisfactory.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

C: Since all gigs have been postponed or canceled because of coronavirus crisis, we are focusing on composition. We are still in the very early stage of the process, but nonetheless some really interesting structures have been laid down. Luckily for us, we can all work from home and meet on conference call to discuss what we created so far and move on.

PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?

C: Our two albums are available; you can stream them on Spotify and you can also find some songs from Enlightened by Darkness and all songs from Tides of Entropy on our YouTube channel. You can buy our music on our official Big Cartel shop.
