Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: What type of artist are you?
Charlie: We’re modern metal musicians at our core but we take many influences from other genres, movies and other arts.
PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.
Haitch: Myself, Charlie and Artis have been playing in a band together for probably 12/13 years now, then back in 2015 we added Liam to the lineup and that’s when COLLECTED really started to take shape and become what we are today. We all grew up in Clacton-on-sea in Essex and yeah, it’s probably one of the most non diverse towns in the country, so it’s really not a place that represents what we’re about. I believe it’s one of the only places in the UK to vote UKIP so I’m sure you get the picture. On top of that it’s an area that doesn’t really care about it’s live music scene, which is quite a hurdle when playing music was so important for us growing up.
PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
Haitch: We try not to stick to one set of influences, instead we try to take influence from whatever we’re intro at the time.
PD: What are your dreams and goals?
COLLECTED: We’d like to see the world and get to play our music along the way I guess. Maybe inspire some people along the way.
PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?
Charlie: Mostly Haitch writes the music and sometimes I do. Then we later refine it as a band in the practice room and Liam will add the vocal melodies and build the lyrics from there. As for the topics we talk about all different things. Mental health, Relationships, Political issues but yeah pretty much whatever we feel needs to be talked about at the time. We tend to channel a lot of self express within our music so it’s usually topics that have hit a nerve or about something personal going on in our lives.
PD: How do you promote your band and shows?
COLLECTED: We usually start with the basics like social media, word of mouth, maybe put up a few posters. Recently we’ve got our own website which is a great hub to keep our followers up to date.
PD: What do you think about downloading music online?
Charlie: I have no problem with it. It’s something that’s free and so widely available people are going to do it, so as an artist you can look at it as a negative but untimely it’s just the natural progression music consumerism has taken and if anything it just means more people have access to your music, Pete.
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
Charlie: Probably Killing in the name of by Rage Against The Machine. It’s such an iconic track and it ticks all the boxes we love. It has a strong message, the music is banging and it’s universally popular with alternative and mainstream audiences.
PD: What are some of your pet peeves?
Charlie: Closed minded people.
PD: What is your proudest moment in music?
Charlie: Probably back in 2019 when we made it to the grand final of Metal 2 The Masses Essex. It was just such a great night, we played a packed-out show, the audience were really vibing and our vocalist Liam got to crowd surf for the first time which is something he’s always wanted to do.
PD: So what are you working on at the moment?
Charlie: So yeah, we’ve got our new single ‘Love With Fury’ coming out 4th June 2021 and we’re heading into the studio to record an EP in the next few months. Along with that we’ve got two shows lined up first ones 23rd June at Coda, Colchester and the second is 3rd July at The Bull, Colchester which is the Metal 2 The Masses Essex all dayer. We’re well excited to get to play live again as it’ll be our first shows back since lockdown.
PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?
COLLECTED: So right now you can listen to us on all the major streaming platforms such as Spotify and if you’d like to help us out even more please head over to our social media pages and give us a like or follow. @collected_uk
