Collapse The Sky – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

PD: What type of artist are you?

CTS: We just label ourselves as a Heavy Metal band, we don’t tend to label it with a specific sub-genre.

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

CTS: We are Collapse The Sky from Norwich, Norfolk. We formed in 2016 and have gigged relentlessly, released 3 albums over a 6 year period, competed in Bloodstock’s Metal to the Masses (2016 & 2022) and became finalists both times.

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

CTS: Our musical influences are hugely based around the rock & metal bands we grew up listening to, that paved the way for modern metal music. Bands such as Metallica, Slipknot, Lamb of God and Killswitch Engage just to name a few! As for non-musical influences, emotions have a large impact on our songs. Music is often written to portray how people feel.

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

CTS: As a band you want to share the same dreams and goals. We want to take this band as far as it can possibly go. None of us know where that will be but it’s an exciting ride nonetheless.

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

CTS: Our very own Flynn Green is a riff machine! He writes the majority, if not all, of our songs and the rest of the band adds their own flavour to create our sound. New to the band is David Lawrence who will be joining Flynn on guitar duties, so we look forward to seeing what he brings to the writing as well.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

CTS: We use our Instagram and Facebook mainly to connect with our fans and to inform them of our shows. Spotify has been great for us as well, loads of people got behind White Flags and added us to lots of playlists, which has really helped the band reach a wider audience.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

CTS: As a society we have welcomed the world of downloading and streaming with open arms. It’s more convenient for people. Within seconds you are listening to your favourite bands, with no real hassle and at a simple monthly cost. It makes our music more accessible, within seconds of the songs being released on Spotify, people from all over the world can hear it.

Personally, I (Lee) am a bit old school and like owning a CD or something from the artist that has some value to it. I still play a lot of the CDs I have collected over the years.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

CTS: Spit Out The Bone by Metallica. That riff was a sitting duck for someone to discover, so simple yet so powerful!

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

CTS: Social media algorithms. It’s becoming increasingly hard for artists to use social media because of how their posts get limited, ultimately to encourage monetising content. A lot of musicians are having to act silly in order to get their content pushed, for example we recently saw someone playing a Cream song whilst covered in cream. You shouldn’t have to be doing that sort of stuff to get views. Good art should be enough.

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

CTS: We were very proud when White Flags was released, the reception to the album was fantastic and made all the hard work worth it. The work isn’t over though and we still have to work hard and stay focused to keep on progressing.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

CTS: We’ve been participating in the Bloodstock Metal to the Masses competition recently and have progressed through the initial heats and semi final into the final on June 2nd. A lot of the rehearsals recently have been geared up towards that. We’ve also started to write some new ideas now that White Flags is out, so there is some new material starting to form, slowly but surely.

PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?

CTS: We have three full length albums currently available, (Seven Eyes, Consumed and White Flags), all of which are available on all online major stores or can be streamed from Spotify.
