Cloudfalls – Interview

Interview with Theo (Vocals/Guitar) of Cloudfalls and Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

PD: What type of artist are you?
T: Hi Pete, I’m a guitar player / singer / composer who is currently in the french band Cloudfalls

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.
T: My name is Theo. I was born in 1982… oh ok the brief version … Musically then, I started play guitar very late at the age of 19, and had my first band 3 years later, it was a melodic death metal band called In Arkadia (still active, different members, different style check it out it’s great), I created it from scratch and made 3 albums, a bunch of shows and then after 8 years in the band I stopped also because I was becoming a father at that time. Then I played rock music for my own pleasure at home, created several songs and started a new band Cloudfalls, we have 2 albums so far. I live in Lyon France, got 2 kids. I am also manager of a brand called Cookut. I’m starting a new music project called Daenerys these days, a come back in metal. Busy life 🙂

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
T: My influences go deep in metal, and rock music, the very first album I ever bought myself (by choice) at the age of 13 was MEAT LOAF, bat out of hell 2. Then it was Rhapsody, symphony of the enchanted land 2 because I liked the cover … And ever since I mostly listen to rock and metal. I learnt guitar by playing Iced earth and Children of bodom, gamma ray (I got a guest from the great Kai hansen on one of my past albums which is for me a big achievement) , I also love stuff like Sum 41, Nickelback, Halestorm, Amaranthe … so many.
Non-musical, I’m a geek, love DC comics, Superman (i got a tattoo of him) and Batman (tattoo is coming soon) star wars, game of thrones, harry potter ..

PD: What are your dreams and goals?
T: I wish someday I can make a worldwide tour, ok a tour in US would already be good enough, even as a roady, chef, or toy boy .. whatever! Bring me in 🙂

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

T: I write my songs 99% so far. They talk about many different thing i’m not stuck on one unique story. It can be a love song, I think love songs are the most songs I did. It can be about superheroes fighting super villains, I got several like that. I also talk about past stories of mine, a girl in particular, I was not clever enough to keep her in my life, I was too young and wild.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

T: I try my best to work with video clips on youtube, instagram and facebook. These days I believe youtube is one of the top social media to discover and listen to music. Also I’m a graphic designer so I love to associate videos to my music. It’s a good way to bring people inside our universe.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

T: About that. Well story short, as a consumer I personally stopped my spotify account a year ago. I had the expensive family one. I figured that I spent more than 200 euros on spotify to listen to the exact same music all the time. I never used the playlist shit… and that in my life I NEVER SPENT 200 euros per year for CDs.. it’s not really because I need the money. But I prefer the old fashion way, I buy an album : I own it. I can listen to it as much as I want, during my whole life. And this is very important, because that means I got to dig and search for the next album I will buy, it’s a risk I take, there is excitement, the album will be good or bad ?? That’s what I missed from just having everything available whenever I want. I ended up listening my same old good albums I already loved and never search for anything else. And also as an artist, I know the royalties I receive from spotify, deezer etc.. and it’s seriously a joke. 0.000001 per listen … omg. I prefer to give the artists a good royalty by buying a real old fashion album. I convert the album on mp3, the old fashion way, windows 10 still does that very well and easy … and I got all my music on my phone available, even without internet connection.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
T: So many good songs out there … my favorite song ever is Far away from Nickelback, The melodies, the sound quality is insane, it’s perfect, anybody fall for it instantly (despite what people say about Nickelback.. they love Nickelback, but it’s not cool to admit it .. fuck them 🙂 )
I would love to have written the whole album Are you dead yet? from Children of Bodom. The best album for me all time. All songs are awesome. Also I would pay and give my kidneys to write any songs for Lzzy Hale from Halestorm, her voice is not from earth.

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?
T: Lazy and slow people. I hate the haters on internet about anything … people can’t just appreciate something the way it was done, they always need to open their mouth and complain. Last star wars is not good, last episode of game of thrones is not good, last avengers is not good etc etc … enough ! 🙂 But in general I don’t mind the stories, and appreciate just the “show”.

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?
T: Well I said it before, I recorded one of my albums with In Arkadia in Hamburg in Germany, with Eike Freese and his studio was also Gammaray’s studio, so We met Kai hansen from Gammaray (ex helloween) when we arrived at the studio, and he was building a kitchen furniture … so yes I helped one of my music god, building a kitchen furniture by holding the thing for him 🙂 true story ! And then later we kindly asked him to sing a chorus on one of our songs, The agonist pledge (available on the damn spotify 😉 – band : “In Arkadia origins”) and He did! Also gammaray’s bass player did some choirs with us. It was an awesome time, I won’t ever forget, they are so cool and kind.
This is more a fan proudest moment 🙂
As a musician, I cried the first time I listened to Mika Jussila’s mastering on my very first album, he made magic, cause my mix sucked ah ah.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?
T: Currently, I’m working on 2 new albums for Cloudfalls. 1st is a regular new album, with new songs in a pure alternative rock style. And 2nd is an orchestral version of previous songs + few new ones, just for fun, so yes it’s about war drums, string ensembles, brass … really so fun to do epic music.
And I’m creating a new Metal band called Daenerys with a female singer.

PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?
T: ok, You can listen our singles on youtube, there is a bunch of very cool videos : youtube.com/cloudfalls
I got our last album to sell physically from Cloudfalls “ravens don’t fall”, but you got to contact me directly to get a copy. Then you can also find it everywhere, spotify, deezer etc.. and you can find also our first album “start over”.

I got 3 albums from In Arkadia (melodic death metal) available on all usual media as well, (search for In Arkadia origins)  etc ..I still have few real albums left.

Thanks Pete for the interview !
