Cindy-Louise – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views – Singer-Songwriter Cindy-Louise

PD:  How would you describe yourself as an artist?

A: In one word, I would describe myself as theatrical. Something comes over me when I make music, perform. It takes on a life of its own.

PD: Can you tell us briefly about your background – i.e. where you’re from, how you came to make music, etc.

A: I am originally from South Africa, Johannesburg (Benoni to be specific). I was always surrounded by music at a young age and started singing lessons at the age of 16. Music has always been a special art form to me, but when I decided to start writing my own music, the world really changed for me and I became much closer with the art form and all who partake. Especially recently, I have been listening to a lot of Rock and Metal music, and I truly feel inspired by these artists words, their instrumentation and their expression. I always have this idea that I want to continue improving myself, I want to make music that touches people the way these artists touch me, and I keep pushing to ensure my music is up there with them.

PD: Who and what inspires you to make music, both in terms of musical and other influences? What do you like to write about in your songs?

A: I would say my husband inspired me most, he is a true listener of music, and he always comes to me and says, “listen to this” and explains in detail what it is he likes about the song. He does the same with my music too, but it’s good because I am not making music for a scholar but for people like the two of us, just listening and connecting with the music. Recent musical influences would be, Highly Suspect, Bad Omens, Badflower, Dead Poet Society, Dorothy and Yungblud. My subject matter is mostly about standing up for yourself, empowerment and just being yourself. In my upcoming music I am going a little more deeper and revealing some emotional subjects in my life. I try be as open as I can with my music, because it is a kind of therapy for me and it’s good to share what’s going on in my life and how I feel.

PD: What are your aspirations as an artist?

A: I would love to create an environment where at a show everyone is energetic and having a great time. I have been to some shows in The Netherlands and that excitement and feeling I get when I am watching my favorite artists, it’s life changing. I would love to give someone that experience at my shows and that’s what I strive for.

PD: What is the proudest moment in your music career so far?

A: Getting on an affiliated/official Spotify playlist. That was a super awesome moment in my career.

PD: Promoting one’s music is such a challenge these days, especially with so many new artists emerging from bedrooms in the day of the home studio. How is that going?

A: I just take it day by day and try have fun with my audience.

PD: And how do you book and promote your live shows and tours? Any performances coming up?

A: I am so happy to be working with Devographic Music Agency, David Devo is such a pleasure to work with and he really has the PR thing down and goes over and beyond. I have three upcoming shows in South Africa and a Festival in The Netherlands. All the links are on my website, I am super excited to be performing.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online? What about streaming sites like Spotify?

A: Downloading depends, I do feel there is a wide option of streaming platforms so I personally don’t see the need for downloading music. I like Spotify, I think there is always work to be done, but that’s all a growing process. I do like the algorithm though because I find interesting music through it and get to discover new artists too.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

A: ‘Midnight Demon Club’ by Highly Suspect. I just love everything about the song, and its so well worked out. It ticks every box in my music mind.

PD: Is there anything you don’t like about the music industry, which you would change if you could?

A: I wish there were more music festivals / opportunities that integrated well established and upcoming/ independent artists. It is important to remember though that the music industry is just like any other industry out there.

PD: So, what are you working on at the moment?

A: New music, an album, and playing live shows.

PD: Where can we learn more about you and buy your music/merch online?
