Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: What type of artist are you?
CE: I am the severely dissociated artist constantly treading new paths and searching for answers in strange places. I want to do so many things but we will see how much I can check on that bucketlist before the journey to the next plane of existence.
PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.
CE: I was born in 1985 in Sweden. I didnt like school at all. Started my musical journey with starting learning the guitar at 12. Along the way I came to the conclusion that I just dont like that many people and I keep my social circle small. I once kidnapped an icecream mascot because I thought he looked lonely in the middle of the night, I have no idea where he resides today. I have three important things in my life at the moment, my daughter, satan and my music. I also like beer and whiskey, important to know!
PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
CE: There is one bright shining musical star that has had the most impact on me and that is Devin Townsend! When I discovered him I learned that I dont have to be the metal guy, I can do whatever I want! There are lots of other influences though ofcourse so lets choose three, Meshuggah, Behemoth and Foo fighters.
Non-musical influences? I would say that satanism, horror movies and walks in the forest fit the bill quite nicely.
PD: What are your dreams and goals?
CE: My dream is to be able to live off my music, I would be fine with it if I only made a bit more than I do today working in an industry. Just to be able to actually pay my bills with money made from my music and live a modest life would be really cool.
The goal right now is to try and get the name Chaos Eternal out there on peoples minds. To spread the music and see how far I can take it.
PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?
CE: The way I see it everything is channeled to me from satan or his demons. I put my personal spin on whatever comes to me and thats how a Chaos Eternal song is made. Many times I have no recollection of writing a song when its done. Sometimes when it is time to put down the basstrack I have forgotten what chords I used and so on. It can be a challenge sometimes.
The songs can vary wildly in themes. I have love songs, I have a song about ancient beings destroying the world, I have a concept about aliens turning festivalgoers into donuts, etc etc. The upcoming albums are a concept about a person who experiences mental illness and tries to process that and rise above the surface and get some air.
PD: How do you promote your band and shows?
CE: Up until now I have only posted links in some facebookgroups. But now with the four albums coming out I wanted to do it properly so I came into contact with Angels PR and they are a great team who I like very much working with so far!
I dont promote any shows. I prefer to keep them a secret from everybody because our bassplayer sucks and I hate our deluded big ego vocalist……Or wait, I dont promote shows because I am a onemanband and cant do shows right now. I dont think people would like to see me with a laptop on stage, haha.
PD: What do you think about downloading music online?
CE: Since streaming doesnt seem to pay that much I dont think illegal downloads are that much of a problem. If those people like the music they will probably want to come to a show or order some albums. But I dont have any statistics on that so how reality looks I dont know. People are going to download shit no matter what, so I guess its not worth the battle.
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
CE: Shitstorm by Strapping young lad comes to mind! Its just so angry and pushes on and on. I just love it! If I could make my voice do a tenth of what Devin does I would be so happy!
PD: What are some of your pet peeves?
CE: People who chew with their mouths open, those sounds drive me fucking crazy! I also dont understand people who come up to me and start talking even when they know my headphones are at full blast so I cant hear them! Many times they just continue talking even though I point out the fact that I cant hear shit…
PD: What is your proudest moment in music?
CE: When a distributor contacted me and wanted to release my third EP with my oneman black metal band Pandemus! But due to my health issues I havent sold more than a couple of my share of the physical release, haha. Ill get to it soon enough. But that was a proud moment for me to have an actual physical release.
PD: So what are you working on at the moment?
CE: Right now I am working on The Journey Pt3: The path to the void & The Journey Pt4: The path to enlightenment. Pt3 is basically done, might be some small tweaks before mixing. Pt4 is well on its way, it has almost an hour playtime with only 4-5 songs, hehe. Im going to write a bunch for Pt4 before I decide what songs will actually be on the album. But there will be 10min+ songs on there for sure, it just seems to go in that direction.
PD: Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.
CE: When Chaos Eternal finally hits the stage I will probably do some stupid shit that leads to our being banned for life from that venue. So that is why you should be there, to see us before we get canceled!
