Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: How would you describe yourself or your band as an artist?
C: We were told once that we “sound like NIN and Florence + The Machine had a baby.” We’ll take it.
PD: Can you tell us briefly about your background – i.e. where you’re from, how you came to make music, etc.
C: We all grew up in various parts of Texas and we all found music at an early age. I think our pull toward music as individuals all looked slightly different, but collectively, the experience of finding music as a means of expression impacted us all the same way. It was like things suddenly made sense…picking up an instrument also brought a sense of belonging or “rightness”.
PD: Who and what inspires you to make music, both in terms of musical and other influences? What do you like to write about in your songs?
C: Honestly, all of our music and our videos come from a desire to tell honest stories. Our music is born out of personal experiences. We’re a really close knit family and much of what we create comes from our conversations.
Humanity, the messiness of life, the shadow parts of who we are… all of it is fascinating and you can find us talking about sex, death and rock & roll most of time. So much of what we create comes out of that.
PD: What are your aspirations as an artist?
C: Keep creating and sharing as far and wide as we can…’till we can’t! We want to be able to play all over the world and keep making really authentic music.
PD: Promoting one’s music is such a challenge these days, especially with so many new artists emerging from bedrooms in the day of the home studio. How is that going?
C: We’re using all the usual channel, social media, radio, streaming etc. but what what’s really been the most meaningful, for us, has been meeting and connecting with people at live shows. That’s the best, hands down.
PD: And how do you book and promote your live shows and tours? Any performances coming up?
C: We work with booking professionals, and that helps! But booking and promoting shows is certainly a whole job itself. Managing the schedule and getting the word out takes effort. We use social media to promote upcoming shows and we also have a monthly newsletter to help folks keep up with all the latest happenings. (You can find it at the bottom of this page: https://cedars.band)
We have some regional shows in Texas in August and the a west coast tour coming up in September…along with some dates in November & December headed east.
PD: Is there anything you don’t like about the music industry, which you would change if you could?
C: Oh wow. Where to begin. Hah! More women in the producer role, more women engineers, more women on stage.
PD: So, what are you working on at the moment?
C: We have a new single being released August 5th and a video for it following in early September. It’s called WomanKing.
We’re also in the studio working on the next full length album – set for release in 2023.
PD: Where can we learn more about you and buy your music/merch online?
C: You can find us here: www.cedars.band
