BUTTERFLIES ON PINS: SCREEN ONE EP
Butterflies on Pins is a four piece formed in London in 2018 and comprising Ross Liddle (voice), Katie Green (bass/drum programming/other voices), Rob Alexander (guitars) and Mariel Camara (drums). Blending explosive elements of art rock, post-punk and dream pop, they issued debut single ‘Dedicated Consumers’, produced by Margo Broom (Fat White Family/Goat Girl) the same year and followed up in 2019 with ‘Still Life’s for Living’. Their frenetic live shows are backed by Derek Jarman-esque visuals created by the band themselves and to date they have played across London and the South East, including shows at their own acclaimed ‘Vapour Trail’ clubnight and a headline show at the Camden Rocks Festival of 2019.
‘Screen One EP’ (produced by Rob Alexander) is the forthcoming release led by ‘Why Do You Stand in the Rain?’, a poetic concoction of atmospheric six string dreamscapes, chattering motorik beats and dub-styled post-punk bass, topped off with Bowie-in-Berlin-meets-Pil-era-Lydon vocals depicting broken lives and forgotten voices along with a spoken word kitchen sink interlude in the centre of the song.
‘All Around Town’ follows with skyscraping shards of shimmering guitars and more lyrical kitchen sink drama, the sound of desperate longing culminating in a thunderous outro. ‘We Met Years Ago’ is a conversational confessional characterised by trademark dubby bass and a gorgeous gliding chorus. The EP ends with ‘Prisoner of my Past’, a volcanic conclusion to the EP both musically and lyrically, with the film noir of the lyrics revisiting characters and themes from across the EP as the brooding music gives way to a suitably ethereal ending.
Their music is furtive.
Their music is a set of stolen glances.
Their music is the walk to the bus stop in the Autumn rain.
Their music is the grainy piece of CCTV footage that they forgot to erase.
Their music is high heels on cobbled stones in the early hours.
Their music is the journey to climax.
Their music IS the climax.
