On 15th November 2019 Cardiff based band Buck And Evans release their debut album “Write A Better Day”. The album is released on Departure Records, through Cargo Records.

The band consisting of vocalist Sally Ann Evans, along with extravagant guitar player Chris Buck, drummer Bob Richards and bassist Dominic Hill, have been making a huge name for themselves since the release of their “Slow Train” single and subsequent releases “Common Ground” and latest single, “Sunrise”.

There is a bit of a back story to this album. The initial release got caught up in the Pledge Music fiasco, causing the band to ‘go for it’ themselves to fulfill all the pledged orders. That was several months ago. Now we have the official release and I was lucky to be asked to relay to you my humble thoughts on this debut album.

The album kicks off with the recognisable “Slow Train” The atmospheric, bluesy number showcases not just the quality of  Sally Ann Evans’ voice, but also the tightness of the band. The production is spot on, it is both gentle and powerful when it needs to be and creates a marvellous wall of sound to wrap you up in. “Change” delights in a totally different way. Piano and voice dominate here. “Change” is a beautiful love song, a homage to a memory and a song of gratitude. Next up is the truly wonderful “Sunrise”. Highlighting the full range of Sally’s vocals, the amazing drumming of Bob Richards, the thundering bass of Dominic Hill  and what a treat we are given with Chris Buck’s ‘pull out all the stops’ guitar solo. “Sunrise” is an epic rock song that does exactly what you want it to do. If you have been impressed with Sally’s vocals so far, just wait until you hear her on “Sinking”. OMG what a performance. The track explodes in awesomeness as Chris Buck lets rip another superb solo, what a track….what an album and that’s only the first four tracks.

“Common Ground” reminds me of Roachford for some reason. It’s another perfectly written number that could easily have been a hit single, a lot more commercial than the other tracks, but that is by no means a negative. The evocative “Back To Yesterday” contains some wonderful moments. With stunning vocals and a sensual clap along melody “Back To Yesterday” will have you smiling with delight. “Fix You” is a heavenly track, a beautiful tale that is told in a delicate and meaningful way. “Trail Of Tears” just gets me, it truly gets me. I think I must have played this track on repeat for the best part of six times. I love the way that Bob Richard’s drum beat introduces the track and as well as each verse. Sally’s vocals dominate, but for me, the goosebumps happen as Chris Buck’s dramatic solo ends and that drum beat returns. Love it.

“Ain’t No Moonlight” is very funky. It has a massive groove to it. I can imagine this being a fan favourite live. Classic Buck And Evans on display again in this remarkable track. The band are on fire here and I particularly like the way that they give this track that live studio feel. “Going Home” struts its stuff next. It has a rockier feel to it and even a hint of attitude. Chris Buck’s solo yet again impresses as he dazzles amongst the frets. “Bonus track “One Four” closes this splendid album. “One Four” is another of those solid tracks that just delights with it’s cleverness.

“Write A Better Day” is an awesome debut album by a band that are certain to get bigger and bigger. The songs are well written, the band play exceptionally well together, it has the most wonderful vocal performance from a strong talented vocalist and plenty of mind blowing guitar solos. These are exciting times for Buck And Evans and even more exciting times for fans of great music.
