Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views http://petesrocknewsandviews.com With Jeff Michell, keyboard and lead vocal from The Bridge
PD What type of artist is The Bridge?.-
JM Well, we stand up as a prog rock band, but recently reviews type us as Metal Prog, however we are a band who enjoy playing the music we love most!

PD Tell us the brief history of The Bridge.~
JM We begin in 2010 when I send the demos from the first album to Alex Labraña (Drums), not expecting a good feedback really (bad quality sound, something very different from our past bands and not looking to do something useful with this music, just having fun). Then he replies to me “Dude, this is a new band, let’s do it!” so we are here after all those years. My friend from college Gonzalo Pavez (Guitar) joined the project, and Francisco Soto (Guitar) and Luis Castillo (Bass) were the last ones to believe in The Bridge.
PD How did you record the album?.-
JM We are an independent band, so we went into the studio with Alex to record the drums in a professional way with the demos as a background. Then I put all the instruments left into the album at home, including vocals. At that time we had no idea how this project will go, so we think “well, if someone like this music in the future, we will find friends on the road”. The full band was complete a year later for the live shows. It took 5 years for me to learn how to mix and master the album, but in 2016 it was finished (finally!)
PD Who are your musical and non-musical influences?~
JM Pink Floyd is always on my top, with Neal Morse. At the time I did the demos, I was hearing “Testimony 1” from Neal Morse and “On an Island” from David Gilmour. But also, a lot of Dream Theater and Rush came into the composition. Non-Musical? Wow… maybe Tolkien and Lewis, looking for the right lyrics and concept album idea. God around us, so He is on very emotion part of my music.
PD What are the dreams and goals from The Bridge?~
JM We are looking for live shows in Chile during 2017, and maybe part of 2018 ending with a live album, playing our debut completely.

PD Who writes your songs, what are they about?~
JM I do, music and lyrics. I usually create the album on demo version and Alex gives me his feedback. Then I change anything that we need to, and go to the studio.
PD How do you promote your band and shows?~
JM We are using social media (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram), but above that we promote our music with our closer friends, they really support us.
PD What do you think about downloading music online?~
JM Its ok, we got great streaming services of music where you can pay for it. Also there is a lot of people who like vinyls, cds, or streaming, or sometime all of that! So you have to be in different areas. Think about the music in the 70s, you had to play every night to get heard. Now you can do that from your living room to the world, blessed internet! About download music for free, I don’t think we have that issue yet but it’s a problem we must face with great live shows that makes you buy the album the same day. You can´t fight against that, so you have to work harder in other areas.
PD What are the biggest obstacles for artists?~
JM Get heard in your own country. I think is something culture: Chile’s music industry doesnt promote local artists, and fans don’t consume local music – you can blame both sides. To be honest, I started looking for local prog bands a couple months ago. Our records are on sale in USA and Europe, physical and digital, but not in South America. I think we must keep working harder than usual to get heard.
PD Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.~
JM The next show is in 28th April, the first show with this new line up and after the album release, so its gonna be kind of a “live debut”. Also its Alex birthday, and he is going to play with four bands in the same night (Alexfest everyone!). The last band it’s a surprise, some classic rock that’s all I can say…

PD Tell us about your next album.-
JM The second album its already recorded, mixed and mastered. We are looking for collaborations and little details, but we are already working on the artwork. It’s a 60 minute album with three long songs, as for the lyrics they’re a little bit more personal, talking about my testimony in a difficult part of my life. I can´t wait to show you this album, but very nervous at the same time.
PD Any last words? –
JM Thank you Pete for your work in the music industry. You really helped us to get heard in every country. We decided to release the lyric video for “World of Men” on your webpage and your help was vital.
