Born Divided – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (

PD:  How would you describe yourself or your band as an artist?

BD: We are a melodic Death Metal band that tries to touch as much style of metal as possible in each of the songs. Born Divided is made up of former members of Blinded By Faith, Kalter and Moonlyght. We incorporate vocal cleans and growls into fast, melodic music. Sometimes everything becomes calm and progressive in order to culminate in a final Epic Climax.

PD: Can you tell us briefly about your background – i.e. where you’re from, how you came to make music, etc.

BD: We come from Quebec City in Canada. Several members had groups before Born Divided such as: Blinded by faith, Kalter, Moonlyght. The desire for music comes from our youngest age listening to bands like Iron Maiden and Metallica. For my part, my parents brought me to play instruments very early in my life and it was an instant passion for me.

PD: Who and what inspires you to make music, both in terms of musical and other influences? What do you like to write about in your songs?

BD: The inspiration for Born Divided compositions comes from all the metal we’ve listened to since childhood: Iron Maiden, Cannibal Corpse, Cradle Of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, Opeth, Symphony X, and many others. Tommy Demers and Michael Beaudoin are the main composers for this album and they have been working since the end of the Blinded By faith years to make the most of the composition and the experiences they have acquired with all these years in different groups. The band’s lyrics stay away from politics but still take an open and critical look at many illogical situations in this world. We also talk about the harmful effects of addiction, the need to be together and united, and the division between humans on all points.

PD: What are your aspirations as an artist?

BD: Our primary goal is to take Born Divided as far as it can go in the music industry. But above all, without wanting to be too dreamy, we want to have fun making music as a group. I believe that is the primary goal of any group. Doing it for us first and if the world starts to like it, so much the better. Otherwise, well, we’ll have fun creating it.

PD: What is the proudest moment in your music career so far?

In 2005, with Blinded By Faith, we opened for Cradle Of Filth… That was my proudest moment so far!

PD: Promoting one’s music is such a challenge these days, especially with so many new artists emerging from bedrooms in the day of the home studio. How is that going?

BD: We have support for the promotion of Asher Media which allows us to be heard by several media. Otherwise, you are right in saying that there is a lot of talent today that comes out and remains in the shadows. So I hope Born Divided will manage to get out of this whirlwind and be heard by as many people as possible.

PD: And how do you book and promote your live shows and tours? Any performances coming up?

BD: For the moment we book our shows in our region with local bands such as: Augury and Valfreya. We got a show with Nordheim, Upon Your Grave and Eternal Closure coming up precisely on December 10, 2022 in Quebec!

PD: What do you think about downloading music online? What about streaming sites like Spotify?

BD: This is the best way to discover several artists quickly. I love Spotify and its playlist. I discovered so many bands through this platform. But unfortunately, this is a double-edged sword. When I bought a CD back then… I took the time to discover and appreciate the purchase I had just made. I gave the CDs I had just bought several chances. Today on Spotify if I don’t like the first time very often I don’t go back to listen to the artist again. But often we discover and love artists after 5-6-7-8 listens. Entk, we discover but can also miss masterpieces because of the 100,000,000 groups available in 1 click.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

BD: I would have liked to have composed Shine on you Crazy Diamond by Pink Floyd… It is the masterpiece of all time. But if we stay at the Metal level, I would have liked to compose Cockroach King the Haken… But above all to have Haken’s talent in all musical spheres. This group is incredible.

PD: Is there anything you don’t like about the music industry, which you would change if you could?

BD: I wish there was more room for new bands at big festivals. Plus, I also hate the fact that bands just starting out have to pay to be on a tour with a bigger band. Imagine having to pay to do shows when these shows often cost you a lot of money in Gas and time. But hey, let’s hope the road will be quick for Born Divided but we are ready to face all the challenges in front of us.

PD: So, what are you working on at the moment?

BD: Our goal for 2022 is to start talking about our band as much as possible and to introduce our music to as many people as possible. We are already writing the next album so that we can bring more songs to Born divided fans.

PD: Where can we learn more about you and buy your music/merch online?

BD: We have a website and we are also very vocal on social media. If you want to listen to our album it is available on all streaming platforms. But those who want to buy a physical version can go to our BandCamp to find our shirts and CDs. Thank you all and Petes Rock news and reviews for this interview.
