Blind Scryer – Interview
Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: What type of artist are you?
BS: Stoner Rock/Doom Metal band.
PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.
BS: Blind Scryer began playing shows in June of 2016 as a 4 piece. In September 2016 we added a second guitarist and began playing shows locally (Louisville, KY) and regionally. Our debut full-length record will be released March 29th, 2019.
PD:Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
BS: You know the classics, Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Captain Beyond, but we also draw a lot of inspiration from our friends in Archarus, Horseburner, Howling Giant, Shi, Stagecoach Inferno, and a bunch of other great bands. You can learn a lot from watching what other bands do when they’re not playing music.
PD: What are your dreams and goals?
BS: Right now we’re focusing on adding some tour dates and writing an EP. We don’t really have any particular goals for the band currently. We’ve honestly just been having fun and taking opportunities as they come. We do put in a great deal of effort but we have been fortunate to play with so many incredible bands already.
PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?
BS: Everyone in the band contributes to the writing process. So far, the music has generally come first, then Blair writes some vocal melodies and eventually fits words to them as we jam on the material. We have experimented with some other writing methods but we seem to fall back on the riff as a foundation.
PD: How do you promote your band and shows?
BS: At this point, we’re not reinventing the wheel. Social medial, local radio, merch sales, hanging flyers, word of mouth, and going to other shows and talking with people.
PD: What do you think about downloading music online?
BS: At this point you should be compensating artists for their music in some form. Even if it’s just streaming. We always suggest purchasing a CD or record or other merch directly from a band, at their show or on their official store or band page. That part of music consumption is changing.
PD: What’s your outlook on the record industry today?
BS: The industry is fine, it just looks different. Artists that want to grow still have to put in the time and promote themselves, now more than ever. Eventually they get to the point that they will lose money if they DON’T find some sort of representation. Then it comes down to working with people you trust and making deals that work for you as much as possible. Like most things it is also very dependent on who you know. Developing a relationship with the community of artists and entrepreneurs around you is essential to success. (Note From Pete: “This has to be the best answer yet to this question”)
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
BS: Green Eyed Lady By Sugarloaf. The answer is in the bass line.
PD: What are some of your pet peeves?
BS: Loud chewing. Too many bands on one show. Bigots.
PD: What is your proudest moment in music?
BS: We honestly never thought we would play with bands like Weedeater, E.H.G., or the Obsessed. Those were some proud moments.
PD: Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.
BS: The Ride the Sun Tour kicks off March 26th in Huntington, WV at the V-Club with Ratship and Floodwall. March 27th in Pittsburgh at Howlers with Smokey Bellows and Sikes And The New Violence. March 28th in Cleveland at Now That’s Class with Slack Spirit Crown and Sparrowmilk. March 29th in Louisville at Odeon (Debut Album Release) with Archarus and Shi, March 30th in Indianapolis at Black Circle Brewing Co. with Wolftooth, Onus, and Lavaborne. April 10th we’re at the Mag Bar with Jakethehawk and Shi. April 11th in Nashville at Springwater Supper Club and Lounge with Jakethehawk and ElonMusk. April 12th at the Mag Bar with Byzantine, the Mound Builders, Stagecoach Inferno.
You should be there because nothing is better than Rock n’ Roll!
