Blackjack Love – Interview
Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: What type of artist are you?
BL: We’re a Heavy Blues, Rock n Roll band.
PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.
BL: Blackjack Love has been around for a few years now, but I was on my own in the beginning (Azza). Since I recruited the other boys (Matt, Sam & Nick) it’s been live for a year or two now. It all stemmed from myself recording a song in LA, then I came back to England & wrote a couple more. That then ended up being the debut album ‘Bullets & Blues’, & it all went from there really.
PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
BL: Musical : Jimi Hendrix/Led Zeppellin/Queens of The Stone Age/Marvin Gaye/Curtis Mayfield/Joe Strummer/Oasis/Foo Fighters…..the list could go on & on
Non-musical : The good old American Dream
PD: What are your dreams and goals?
BL: World domination, musically that is.
PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?
BL: I’m the main songwriter (Azza). But the other boys (Matt, Sam & Nick) have started writing more & bringing it to the table to add some spice. Most of what I write, I have no idea what I’m writing about until I read it back & go “ah that’s clearly about…..” I can’t sit down & force myself to write about anything in particular. Nine out of ten times I just write & see what comes. A lot of them a made up stories, some about love, anger, whatever comes to fruition.
PD: How do you promote your band and shows?
BL: All via Facebook/Twitter/Instagram. Go look us up & check us out.
PD: What do you think about downloading music online?
BL: It’s a double edged sword. It’s great that everything you create is available to people worldwide at the touch of a button, but I also think downloading music online kinda killed the vibe as well. People used to save up & go watch their favourite acts live, get their CDs etc & enjoy the whole experience. Now you can just download a track or watch a gig on YouTube. The life of a true rock n roller is dying out man.
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
BL: Inner City Blues by Marvin Gaye. That is just an absolute fucking masterpiece. I wish I could sing like him too.
PD: What are some of your pet peeves?
BL: Guitars when going out of tune. Cyclists who take up the middle of the road. The overhead speed signs on motorways. Tax. This list could go on & on man.
PD: What is your proudest moment in music?
BL: Anytime we play & people sing the words, ain’t many things that can top that kinda buzz.
PD: So what are you working on at the moment?
BL: We have a bunch of new tracks we’re tightening up ready to record, which might head in to recording a new album. Designing some new merch. We recorded an acoustic session a while back which is on YouTube, so we might do a similar thing but balls-out electric. We have a new single coming out in the coming weeks too.
PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?
BL: Our album ‘Bullets & Blues’ is available along with the singles ‘Forever Man’ & ‘Before I Leave’ on all streaming platforms, iTunes/Apple Music/Spotify/Google Play/Deezer etc etc.
