Bendida – Interview

Bendida – Interview

Interview with Vinnie Atanasov (guitars, vocals, compositions, lyrics of Bendida) and Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

PD: What type of artist are you?

VA: Personally as an artist I am a seeker and discoverer. I prefer creating my own path and go ahead together with my band mates. Discovering new directions can be more difficult for us, but the result is most satisfying for all. If we have to give some “borders” and descriptions of our music, it’s always very difficult. Putting frames on your music can “lock the doors” of the imagination and destroy all options for trying experimental new things. Of course some people prefer to put “stamps” and search for them everywhere. If they want to put some “stamps” on our music, even if we don’t like it at all, maybe we’ll have some from the symphonic metal genre, some elements from power metal, some influence by traditional Bulgarian folklore.  We prefer to say “Fantasy metal” because it somehow unites most of our elements and the direction of our lyrics. We have beautiful melodic female lead vocals, choirs, classical instruments, heavy guitar riffs, extreme power drums, epic choral parts, folklore rhythmic and many other attractive elements.

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

VA: I am Vinnie – the guitarist, singer and songwriter of Bendida who founded the band 12 years ago in 2008. I started to take guitar lessons and solfeggio at the age of 11, later I started to play the violin for a while. Meanwhile I got some basic skills in playing drums and keyboards and I must confess this was very useful later in the process of song-writing.  I forgot to mention another very attractive instrument that I also use in Bendida songs – this is tambura – traditional folklore string instrument with beautiful clear sound. Bendida is my main band at the moment and I put all of my energy, love, inspiration and time in it. Apart from music I work in the IT sphere.

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

VA: My musical influences come from the classical and symphonic music, traditional folklore and metal bands that use these elements. Some of my favorite bands are Therion, Rainbow, Manowar, Rhapsody and neoclassical guitar heroes like Yngwie Malmsteen and Tony MacApline and many others…. In spiritual aspect,  I get inspiration by fantasy tematics and mythology.

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

VA: My band mates and I have the most normal wish – to share our songs with as many connoisseurs as possible. We really hope our audience will get and appreciate the message that we send them with every song.

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

VA: I am the song writer of our music also writer of the lyrics, arrangements, orchestrations and choral parts. We are a big band of eight official members and a whole choir. If our music was a painting, each member of the band would give his unique and colorful spot in the final appearance. Everybody in the band gives a sign with his/her personal sensitivity over the final expression.

Our songs tell different stories, some of them are inspired by mythology, and others are based on fantasy literature. Recently we have songs inspired by History. In the last album we have a song called History of the World, it is nearly 16 minutes and it includes  six parts. With each one of them we tell a different story captured a period of human’s development! We have another song called Desolated Sea,  inspired by Magellan’s circumnavigation. We are influenced by different mythologies, but mostly Thracian and Slavic mythology. In the last album there is a song called The Legend of Gilgamesh and it’s dedicated to the ancient Sumerian hero and semi-god  Gilgamesh.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

VA: We use all kind of social medias  to promote the band and our shows. For more important events such as a release of an album or a release of a video, we turn to PR agencies.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

VA: This is part of the current state of the modern music industry and we take it for granted at the moment. We make efforts to be in all social networks and streaming platforms, so we encourage people to download our music from all our official channels. Those who do it in other ways also contribute in one way or another to the promotion of our music.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

VA: We think that our music is multi-layered and possesses own personal look .

I believe that every song has the power to teach, to change, sometimes a song has the power to cure. Many people have told us that our music makes them forget about their pain or personal problems. This is really great and I’m happy we managed to create a Fantasy world for escaping and curing souls.

I wish I’d written a song that can make people better humans, more caring, more loving and protecting.

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

VA: I’m proud of our latest album – First of the Heroes. I am proud of the compositions in it, and the whole process of creativity until we reach the final result! The result is one very layered album, filled with various beautiful-sounding melodies – recorded by our wonderful vocalist Kremena! The album features many classical instruments such as violas, violins, french horns and many others. That’s why I think the sound of the album is epic, orchestral and impressive. In addition, a real classical choir joined the recordings –  amazing Academic choir – “Sveta Paraskeva” with conductor Galina Lukanova . I’m proud with my talented colleagues as well.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

VA: We are currently working on the promotion of our latest album “First of the Heroes” 2020, which was released in March this year, and due to the current situation we do not have the opportunity to go on tour and live concerts to present it. At the same time, I’m working on the songs for our third album, which we plan to release in 2022

PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?

VA: Yes, our music is available in almost all streaming platforms and it can be listened there.
