Behind Our Reflections – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

PD: What type of artist are you?

I’m a drummer, to keep everyone in my time! – Remy

I am the bass player at Behind Our Reflection, but I mainly occupy the place of the man who shakes his hair on stage … it’s a good job – Fabrice

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

I’m Remy, I come from Reunion Island and I play drums in Behind Our Reflections. I’ve been playing drums for ten years as a self-taught, and I still have a lot to learn to make music live around me. – Remy

I was born in the East of France where I learned music like bass and singing. I played in a group a few years before settling on Reunion Island in 2018, the same year I joined BEHIND OUR REFLECTION. – Fabrice

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

My musical influences are mostly metal music, especially progressive metal and djent. I also listen to rap, reggae, jazz, electro, chill… All of these influences to make a large vision of music in my mind. – Remy

My musical influences come from some artists who like to mix any style of music like Mike Patton in Mr.Bungle or Damon Albarn in Gorillaz. I have a preference for death-metal like GOJIRA, SEPULTURA, AVATAR. – Fabrice

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

My dream is to live simply, making something that I like and that I could share. In a professional way as well as a musical way, it depends on opportunities 😉 – Remy

I am a small person and at each concert I never see anything that happens on stage. One day I promised myself that it would be me on stage to see what is happening there and now I can say that it is a dream that I realized with my friends from BEHIND OUR REFLECTION. My next goal would be to shake my hair on even more stage because … it’s a good job. – Fabrice

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

It’s the guitarist (Fredo Moutoumodely) who has the main part in writing songs. The bassist (Fabrice Fleisch) and I give him some advices and rhythmical ideas to remodel the song, trying to make a positive impact in his definition. Our singer (Brice Ferrero) is the one who gives a story, some modifications that we propose make him feel the song in a better way to express itself. All of this to make sure that we respect our identity. – Remy

I do not write the songs but I give my opinion on what seems to me good or to rework. But usually I just shake my hair, it’s a good job. – Fabrice

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

We are available on some streaming platform and we also share posts on social networks to make people aware of what we do. The main part of our work is at home because metal music in Reunion Island is not very common. So we are very pleased to make the community live and grow by playing in local events, or by organizing some concerts with local bands that we know. – Remy

The founding member really takes care of that, thanks to social networks in general. – Fabrice

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

Downloading music online sounds weird, because musicians have to work a lot to make their music available for people (writing, promoting, performing…), and downloading is just a clic, like taking what you want without any compassion. – Remy

I think it’s great. that allows to discover a lot of group which are not available at a record store. Personally it often made me want to see concerts to buy physical albums from the artist. – Fabrice

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

Bleed from Meshuggah because they’re just totally insane! – Remy

This question is complicated, it always depends on the mood of the moment and there I will say Global Warming from GOJIRA. – Fabrice

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

Playing a show without eating, food is life! – Remy

I don’t know how to create music, I can write lyrics but I can’t create a melody. – Fabrice

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

In 2019 we play a big show in one of the biggest concert hall in Reunion Island and my band asks me to play a solo a few days before the show. I write something on a song that I like, taking a lot of pleasure on it! Then I was very proud to play it to keep people excited for our final song! – Remy

The moment that made me the most proud in music is when strangers ask you at the end of your concert to replay one of your songs, the best in all that is when this songs and the one that you like to play the most. – Fabrice

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

I work on drum fills, with local drummers that I respect, to express myself in a groovy way in any kind of music. With Behind Our Reflections, I try to be more creative to let us explore music in different ways. It’s a very big part for us in writing because we want to enjoy it as fuck, such as the public! – Remy

I shake my hair, it’s a good job. – Fabrice

PD: Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.

We are working on new stuff to take more and more pleasure during the show, and it will be significant on the show quality 😉 – Remy

We’re going to play in several different places on Reunion Island and I invite you to come and shake your hair because it’s really, a good job. – Fabrice
