Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: How would you describe yourself or your band as an artist?
BAR II: BAR II is a studio Rock band, stoner, highly accurated in term of production. We want the song memorable, but surprising. A mix between reminds and anticipation.
Actually, never get borded…and been smacked at the same time
PD: Can you tell us briefly about your background – i.e. where you’re from, how you came to make music, etc.
BAR II: We are 2 musicians. Mr du Penfast as a producer, mixer for many years, with a lot of his work on the radio, plays guitar, bass and drums in BAR II. Thom, is a media branding dealer at daytime and rock star at night time. He played in multiple bands before BAR II, and sing and plays guitars on these tracks.
PD: Who and what inspires you to make music, both in terms of musical and other influences? What do you like to write about in your songs?
BAR II: Musicaly talking, it is quite obvious that we love heavy rock bands like Queens of the stone age, Royal blood, The heavy, Arctic monkeys, Soulwax and many others. But we like more generally what is raw, deranged, even aggressive. Everything is too polish these days, this is why we try to express the dark and mad side of our century, to see if something can really shine from this mud at the end.
PD: What are your aspirations as an artist?
BAR II: Just stay stuck in heads, with our words or with our energy. Let something nice for any anger or madness to be focus toward something memorable. If it can help to stay out of depression or tiredness. This is one of the music goals.
PD: What is the proudest moment in your music career so far?
BAR II: “Music career” for BAR II is way too excessive, this is just the beginning. For now, all feedbacks are great, we have some interesting contacts with UK labels, we‘ll see what’s happens.
PD: Promoting one’s music is such a challenge these days, especially with so many new artists emerging from bedrooms in the day of the home studio. How is that going?
BAR II: Because one of BAR II’s member is a music “professional”, we don’t really suffer of this home studio step. We can have really serious production skills that make our sound and master quite noticeable as “pro”. This is one of the things that makes us apparently different form other bands with the same level of fame. That ‘s what curators, for exemple, says most of the time as a feedback.
But you’re right, that is a jungle.
PD: And how do you book and promote your live shows and tours? Any performances coming up?
BAR II: We don’t do live shows for now. Good shows are made by “show of “people, as I said, We are more a studio producing band than a “show of” sort of expression. We love to create songs, not especially to perform them…..so far..
PD: What do you think about downloading music online? What about streaming sites like Spotify?
BAR II: As a listener, streaming is great. As a producer, not so much… something went wrong somewhere.
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
BAR II: Maybe a song which a mix of “Because” by the Beatles, “Paranoid Android” by Radiohead and No one knows” by Queens of the stone age.
All of them picture a weird journey where you don’t know what is the next step…but always better. Awesome!
PD: Is there anything you don’t like about the music industry, which you would change if you could?
BAR II: Many things, and not only in music industry, unfortunately, promotion-wise is way too important compare to production-wise, it can’t be sain at the end.
But speaking about music industry, which goes thru streaming these days, there is an unfair treatment by the platforms to me. You (they) pay the same price for every artist, the famous ones but also the unknown ones. It’s unfair. People are ok to pay much more to see a Beyonce show than a rock band in a cave, so it should be the same with the audio production. Stars deserve to get well paid by the platforms , because they have big scores. In another way, I ‘m sure there is a lot of people who would be fully satistfied by listening all the great stuff ( more exposed in that case) of the unerground scene, for a raisonable price…. Hum, do I go a bit far?:-)
PD: So, what are you working on at the moment?
BAR II: We are working on new songs right now, we have 3 more nearly finished and some others in stock. We‘ll go closer to the listener with these ones.
PD: Where can we learn more about you and buy your music/merch online?
