Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: What type of artist are you?
BS: Rock ‘n’ roll with a little glitter, bubble gum, powerpop, and ’77 punk inspiration thrown in.
PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.
BS: Baby Shakes started back in 2005 in NYC and we’ve have had a number of releases including 4 LPs and about 10 eps most of which were self-released on our own label Lil’ Chewy. The band line up has always been Mary, Judy and Claudia until we finally found our perfect match of a drummer a few years ago. Ryan has been our rock’n’roll brother and we’ve had tons of fun tearin’ it up together at home and around the world. We’re really passionate about playing music and collect old records, we even get to DJ sometimes, and we currently have our own radio show on AZ ROCK radio based out of Puerto Rico. Recently we have the support of the fabulous folks at Dimple Discs who have done a fantastic job with our latest release, a collaboration between Baby Shakes, Stephen Mailey and Billy and Damian of the Undertones.
PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
BS: Chuck Berry, Slade, Ramones, Buzzcocks, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers, the Go-Gos, The Shangri-las, The Equals and the Undertones just to name a few. Jane Fonda, Malala and Tom Petty (for everything he represents and not just his music).
PD: What are your dreams and goals?
BS: Just being able to tour around the world and do what we love for this long has been one of our biggest dreams. When we first started our band we would’ve never imagined that we’d have the opportunity to travel and play on festivals alongside so many bands that we love and respect. In that aspect we feel truly lucky and fulfilled. There are a few places that we would love to travel to and play including Hawaii and parts of Europe and Asia that we haven’t been to yet but touring Australia is our next big goal. We plan to make that a reality as soon as it’s safe to tour again. It would also be nice to get one of our songs in a cool movie or TV show one day.
PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?
BS: It’s a collaborative effort between Mary, Judy and Claudia. One of us comes up with an idea or a melody/ riff and then we go from there with the arrangement. They’re usually about good vibes, having fun and standing up for what you believe in.
PD: How do you promote your band and shows?
BS: We get by with a little help from our friends ? Instagram, bands in town, Bandcamp and Facebook apps seem to be the most helpful. When we first started we used to go out to every record shop to drop off handbills and walk around town taping up homemade flyers to street lights. We do still have to flyer a round some but social media has been a really helpful tool that allows us to propel our reach.
PD: What do you think about downloading music online?
BS: It’s a great option, again it makes our music accessible to a wider audience. We prefer Vinyl because we’re collectors but it’s always nice to have a digital music library as a back up.
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
BS: Rebel,Rebel. Brilliant catchy riff and catchy chorus, the lyrics are fun and provocative, and it still gives us chills and gets us dancing years later.
PD: What are some of your pet peeves?
BS: Pushy people who don’t listen and want to force their opinion on you.
PD: What is your proudest moment in music?
BS: Headlining the 100 Club was pretty rad. The first time we got to tour Japan was a HUGE accomplishment for us and we were honoured to have been invited back. Being introduced by John Waters AND playing on the same festival bill as Iggy Pop was also huge for us!!! Our proudest moment most recently was walking the streets of Derry escorted by Damian and Billy of the Undertones AND getting to record together in a studio with them.
PD: So what are you working on at the moment?
BS: We just had a release on Dimple Discs that is one 2 singles from the EP collaboration with Billy and Damian of the Undertones. So look out for the follow up coming your way pretty soon, it’s just a catchy and will knock your platform boots off!!! In the meantime we’re writing some songs of our own and hope to record and release an LP by the time this pandemic let’s up and it’s safe to tour again.
PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?
BS: We have music available for download and streaming on all digital music platforms which you can access here: https://ffm.to/babyshakes , or on Dimple Discs/ Baby Shakes Bandcamp page.
