Arcanica – Interview

Interview with Scan Boltron of Arcanica and Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

PD:  How would you describe yourself or your band as an artist?

SB: A vessel for interpretation and reimagination of the sonic and visual spaces that envelop me.

PD: Can you tell us briefly about your background – i.e. where you’re from, how you came to make music, etc.

SB: Been doing music since I was 15 and have been hooked ever since. Always pretty self taught. And have had a crippling addiction to being in a band. Its kind of a problem.

PD: Who and what inspires you to make music, both in terms of musical and other influences? What do you like to write about in your songs?

SB: Generally trauma is what drives me to start a new creation. That and emotional strife. Im a little worried now that my life is going so well that I may run out of inspiration.

But people like Trent Reznor have always been pretty inspiring. That and Leprous have been really blowing my mind recently.

PD: What are your aspirations as an artist?

SB: It would be nice to have some music in a film or show one day. But for right now its just nice to release music and make fans and do some touring.

PD: What is the proudest moment in your music career so far?

SB: It was pretty nice touring the country in Surgeon.

PD: Promoting one’s music is such a challenge these days, especially with so many new artists emerging from bedrooms in the day of the home studio. How is that going?

SB: I find it creatively very freeing. The means of production are at our fingertips at all times. Being a photographer/video creator as well the marriage has been pretty serendipitous.

PD: And how do you book and promote your live shows and tours? Any performances coming up?

SB: Booking is all networking, We have a show May 19th with Hammerfal and Empress we are pretty stoked about.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online? What about streaming sites like Spotify?

SB: I’m pretty whatever about it. It’s actually kind of nice that music is so available but I dont really use spotify. As someone who remembers $20 CDs and has never made my living from selling any physical music its kind of a nice time to consume.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

SB:I really like A Change Gonna Come by Sam Cooke but I have no delusions about it being something I could have written or should have written. Its a masterpiece.

PD: Is there anything you don’t like about the music industry, which you would change if you could?

SB: It would be perfect for me if it just would be completely tailored to my every desire and whim. But I guess life is supposed to be hard.

PD: So, what are you working on at the moment?

SB: We’ve got an album we plan on releasing later this year.

PD: Where can we learn more about you and buy your music/merch online?

SB:  https://arcanicamusic.com/
