Ancient Settlers – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (

PD: What type of artist are you?

AS: One of those who try to be authentic regardless its cost. One of those who hate trends. An artist who only feels like a real one when stands behind the drum set.

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

AS: I’m Herman Riera, 35 years old, married, drummer of Ancient Settlers, born in Venezuela but currently living in Portugal.  I was into music since I was a kid, but it just has been a hobby/passion for the most part of my life!

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

AS: Death, In Flames, Arch enemy Children of Bodom, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Pantera.

Nonmusical are George Carlin and Hans Rosling,

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

AS: My main goal is to be able to balance my work, my family, and my band, and achieve success in all of these three aspects.

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

AS: Our songs tell the history of human decadence from an inner perspective.

Not what you see out there, but what you can feel inside. A collection of memories you’ve collected through the experience.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

AS: We mainly use social media. There is cheaper, faster, and efficient. And more recently, we move forward and start to work with a PR agency.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

AS: I mean, there is nothing wrong with it, if you don´t sell it, but I think online music download is coming to an end. You don´t need to save it on your device anymore, everything is out there for you.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

AS: Wasted years by Iron Maiden. Its message really hits me: Your present is your golden time.

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

AS: People who believe in Astrology, “good vibes, “Feng Shui” and all of these things, Instagram for pets and newborn, grammatical mistakes.

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

AS: When I was living in Venezuela and did our first European tour with our previous band. It felt like a dream come true for me! I was so happy the whole month.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?
