Amongst Liars – Interview

by Andrew Cotterill

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (

PD: What type of artist are you?

Pic by Lynda McKenna

AL: We are an alternative rock band from Brighton and Eastbourne.

PD: Tell us the brief history of your band

AL: We are the love child of two local bands who both imploded in 2019.

We got together and started playing in early 2020, literally just before the pandemic hit – great timing eh….

We played one show and then had to wait 16 months to play the next one. But during this time we wrote loads and recorded when we could – and have to date released 6 singles!

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

AL: We all like different types of music, but names that spring to mind are David Bowie, Chris Cornell and Audioslave, Stevie Wonder, Nirvana, Royal Blood, RATM, QOTSA, BMTH.

Non musically – and without getting all hippy on you – it has to be the Dalai Lama. A symbol of inspiration, love, and kindness – this is more important now than ever when there is so much hate and division in the world. People generally need to chill the fuck out and be kind to each other.

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

AL: We just love music and have a collective dream / goal of playing bigger stages and enjoying the experience.

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

AL: We all write together – it’s a really good process. We jam together and develop ideas. Also Leo will come up with some riffs or ideas and work them together with Adam and Ross and then Ian will get some melodies and we will bring it all together in the rehearsal room. We are very constructive with criticism as ultimately want the best songs possible, so have a high benchmark for a song to get finished.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

AL:We spend a lot of online – we always speak to fans and people on our socials as it’s really important to get to know people and connect with them. It’s a lot of fun too meeting new people like this.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

AL: It’s the norm now really and you have to embrace that. We always offer limited edition downloads of songs from our site and also have done some physical bootleg type CDs – and can’t wait to do some vinyl and more physical sales when our album comes out next year too.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

AL: Black Hole Sun – ‘cos it’s perfect.

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

AL: I hate arrogance and rudeness in all forms. Unfortunately there is a lot of that in the music business – but we steer away from people like that.

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

Ian: I would hope that there are plenty of moments to come with this band, but in the past it was definitely supporting Franz Ferdinand with my old band at the InMusic Festival in Croatia – what a show that was!

Leo: My old band headlined the Platform One stage at Isle of Wight Festival in 2018. That was a really special moment to play such a legendary festival.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

AL: We have just finished recording an album’s worth of material, so are planing things at the moment to release that.

And we are also getting ready for our U.K. headline tour in November – really can’t wait for that. Here’s some info about that:

PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?

AL: We are all over the internet – you can hear  our singles on Spotify, ITunes – pretty much everywhere!

Our homepage is and all the socials are here too – come and say hi as we like to chat!
