21 Taras Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

PD: What type of artist are you?

21T: 60’s and 70’s influenced rock

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

21T: James Steinbach (lead gtr), Alec Lister (drums), Jim Williams (bass) and Austin Salazar (rhythm gtr) all went to the same high school. It all started with Alec and James; who were close. James then recruited a bass player by literally going up to the first person he saw; who happened to be Jim; and asked them if they played any instruments. Austin was also a recruitment of James, and myself (Julian; vocals/keys) found James on a music forum website and later met the band for our first rehearsal. We hit it off and played a show only a few days later.

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

21T: Leonardo Dicaprio (James), Winona Ryder (Jim), Dirk Nowitzki (Julian)

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

21T: Jim would like to earn a sustainable income from the music, James would like to open a school for music and also a rehabilitation center for recovering addicts. My goal (Julian) is to eat the world’s largest taco. Beef preferably.

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

21T: All of our songs really do have a different writing process. For some songs we all sit down and start jamming, while other songs are written by one or two members and then brought to the rest of the guys. We definitely try not to fall into a pattern or consistent writing process. I think that is the fastest way for things to become stale.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

21T: Social media is huge, networking in general and actually just getting out and meeting people in person. Nothing like talking with our fans directly and getting to know who they actually are.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

21T: Downloading and streaming music online has its upsides. Music today is so accessible which is great, but in turn it also becomes more disposable because of it. I think its easy for bands to be heard today, but with so many bands its easy to be written off.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

21T: Children Of The Grave(Jimmy) because of its incredible riffs, Babe I’m Gonna Leave You(James) because it is such an emotional song, We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions (Julian) because it is such a stadium song. It is amazing to see people of all ethnicities and backgrounds coming together and chanting these songs at worldwide events.

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

21T: Jimmy hates when people merge without using their blinkers, Julian would chose people chewing with their mouth open. James goes with people staying within their comfort zone and just and overall complacency.

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

21T: Headlining the Gothic Theater in our hometown Denver, Colorado. It was our first time headlining a major venue. Seeing our name on the marquis was something else.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

21T: Album 3, planning our next tour and we also have a new music video on the horizon for our song “Sleep Softly”.

PD: Tell us about your new album and why we should listen to it.

21T: Our new album “Change” will take you on a journey through the mid 60s and 70s. Our song “Gettin’ Hungry” will take you back even further with some of the jazz influences it holds. There are so many small details in production that will make any audiophile joyous as all hell. Check it out here:  https://21tarasband.bandcamp.com/album/change
