1/4 Chubz – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (

PD: What type of artist are you?

1/4C: In regards to the boys, a band of barely talented misfits, who through some unspoken power of being together – and some added finesse from Mariam – have a desire and ability to make a sound mysterious enough to leave you wanting more.

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

1/4C: We originally kicked off the band in 2013 with Callum, John and Barrett. We went our separate ways at the end of 2013 and then in 2019 when Callum unexpectedly passed away, we decided to get the band back together.  The new line up arrangement has John taking the helm on lead guitar and vocals; Barrett stepping up to the bass; introducing Troy on the drums which added a ferocity to the band. We have also added the multi-talented Mariam, who has added a well needed polish to the band by introducing Violins and keys to the compositions.

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

1/4C: I feel anything that stems from a sub culture that can be trusted no matter if it’s blues, pop, punk, rock, hip hop, hell even an orchestrated piece. If it comes from a place of sincerity and positivity, we welcome it as productive inspiration. Now on the other hand there’s a lot of mass-produced artless noise out there that people are happy to accept as music. If it doesn’t set you free and remind you there’s more that this physical existence even for three minutes… give it up man.

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

1/4C: What would you like to hear, that we’re going to be bigger than oasis and we’re going to sell out Wembley. Our dream is to stay alive, stay together and be happy doing this thing we love. Our goal is to make others happy along the way.

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

1/4C: Our first song – Until We Meet Again – was a joint effort between John and Barrett about the death of our friend Callum. I find it easy to express emotion and convey how I’m feeling through writing lyrics and music. Although unfortunately I am most inspired to write during the times that I feel the lowest. I think it helps me direct negative feelings and turn them into something positive. You could say writing Salvation have lifted me from a dark place.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

1/4C: Raw sex appeal.

Social media has been the absolute pinnacle of getting ourselves exposure. Along with the team at Whanga Records here in Dunfermline and the stable mate Birrell or Biscuit and TwinsTown we have managed to network and promote each other, gaining radio play and recognition, not just in our home town but around the world.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

1/4C: I think downloading music is a double-edged sword. It’s obvious what the power of the internet has done to the high street record shop and the joy of going home disc in hand paying it on repeat until your mother’s ears bleed. We have to take into account the bands that it has helped get discovered and now instantaneously you can share a track with someone that you’ll know they’ll love –possibly on the other side of the planet.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

1/4C: I wish we had written “spread your love” by BRMC. If there was ever a piece of music that I would say captured our drive, hunger and style, it’s that.

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

1/4C: People who break guitar strings and don’t tell you.

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

1/4C: My proudest moment in music is the song I wrote: I guess this is goodbye, seeing people being genuinely touched by it – to the point of being reduced to tears. It not only inspired me, it made me realise people have been through the same troubles as I have and that I’m not alone.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

1/4C: Lots of good music coming your way – a real buzz in the studio the now.

PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?

1/4C: Our latest single Salvation can be found here:
